    15. Why is the Yoga system designated as 'Seśvara Sāṁkhya'?

Answer: Because Yoga integrates Īśvara (God) as the twenty-sixth ontological principle alongside the twenty-five principles of Sāṁkhya.

     2-Mark Short Answer Questions :

    1. Write the names of any two Tanmātras of the Sāṁkhya. [GU 2024]

Answer: Two subtle essences (tanmātras) accepted in Sāṁkhya are Śabda-tanmātra (sound essence) and Sparśa-tanmātra (touch essence).

    2. Name two authoritative source texts of Sāṁkhya philosophy.

Answer: Two foundational source texts of Sāṁkhya are Īśvarakṛṣṇa's Sāṁkhyakārikā and Vācaspati Miśra's commentary Sāṁkhyatattvakaumudī.

    3. Mention two primary classical texts of Yoga philosophy.

Answer: Two authoritative texts of Yoga are Maharṣi Patañjali's Yogasūtra and Vyāsa's Yogabhāṣya (or Vijñānabhikṣu's Yogasārasaṁgraha).

    4. Enumerate the three types of suffering (Trividha Duḥkha) in Sāṁkhya philosophy.

Answer: The three types of suffering are: 1) Ādhyātmika (intrinsic psycho-somatic ailments), 2) Ādhibhautika (extrinsic suffering caused by other living beings), and 3) Ādhidaivika (supernatural suffering caused by cosmic forces, natural disasters, or spirits).

    5. What is the nature of 'Puruṣa' in Sāṁkhya philosophy?

Answer: In Sāṁkhya, Puruṣa is pure, non-composite, eternal, immutable, and transcendent consciousness. It is not an active agent (akarta), but an unattached spectator (sākṣī) and knower (draṣṭā), distinct from material Prakṛti and plural in number.

    6. What is 'Prakṛti'? State its fundamental characteristic.

Answer: Prakṛti is the uncaused, primordial material ground of the phenomenal universe. Its defining characteristic is the dynamic equilibrium (sāmyāvasthā) of the three Guṇas—Sattva, Rajas, and Tamas. It is non-conscious, eternal, and transformational.

    7. What is meant by 'Vivekakhyāti'?

Answer: Vivekakhyāti denotes the intuitive, discriminative discernment between the pure conscious Self (Puruṣa) and the insentient material matrix (Prakṛti). This realization eradicates primordial ignorance (avidyā) and leads directly to Kaivalya (liberation).

    8. Name the five stages of the mind-stuff (Pañca-Cittabhūmi) in Yoga philosophy.

Answer: The five mental levels (cittabhūmis) identified in Yogic psychology are: 1) Kṣipta (Restless/Agitated), 2) Mūḍha (Torpid/Inert), 3) Vikṣipta (Distracted), 4) Ekāgra (One-pointed/Focused), and 5) Niruddha (Completely Restrained). The last two are conducive to Yoga.

    9. Enumerate the internal limbs (Antaraṅga Sādhana) of Aṣṭāṅga Yoga.

Answer: The three internal limbs of Aṣṭāṅga Yoga are: 1) Dhāraṇā (Concentration), 2) Dhyāna (Meditation), and 3) Samādhi (Absorption). Together, these three are termed Saṁyama.

    10. Enumerate the external limbs (Bahiraṅga Sādhana) of Aṣṭāṅga Yoga.

Answer: The five external limbs are: 1) Yama (Restraints), 2) Niyama (Observances), 3) Āsana (Posture), 4) Prāṇāyāma (Breath control), and 5) Pratyāhāra (Sense withdrawal). These discipline the body and sensory organs.

    11. What is 'Kriyāyoga' in the Yoga system?

Answer: Kriyāyoga comprises the practical preparatory disciplines prescribed by Patañjali to attenuate afflictions and induce Samādhi: Tapas (austerity/discipline), Svādhyāya (self-study and scriptural recitation), and Īśvarapraṇidhāna (devotional surrender to God).

    12. What are 'Mahat' and 'Buddhi' according to Sāṁkhya?

Answer: Mahat is the first, subtlest cosmic evolute emerging from Prakṛti upon the disturbance of the Guṇas. In the individual psycho-physical organism, it functions as Buddhi (intellect)—the sattva-predominant, decision-making internal faculty (antaḥkaraṇa).

    13. State the core distinction between Samprajñāta and Asamprajñāta Samādhi.

Answer: In Samprajñāta Samādhi (cognitive absorption), consciousness remains focused on a distinct object of meditation with active awareness (bīja). In Asamprajñāta Samādhi (ultra-cognitive absorption), all mental modifications cease entirely, leaving only latent impressions (saṁskāras).

    14. Which principles emerge directly from 'Ahaṁkāra' in Sāṁkhya evolution?

Answer: From Sattva-dominated Sāttvika Ahaṁkāra arise the internal mind (Manas), the five cognitive senses, and the five conative senses (11 organs). From Tamas-dominated Tāmasa Ahaṁkāra emerge the five subtle essences (Tanmātras).

    15. What is the significance of 'Īśvarapraṇidhāna' in Yoga philosophy?

Answer: Īśvarapraṇidhāna signifies total devotional resignation and surrender of all actions and their fruits to God. In Yogic practice, it purifies the mind, subdues egoism, and serves as an efficacious path toward attaining Samādhi.

     5-Mark Analytical Questions :

    1. Explain the Sāṁkhya theory of Causation (Satkāryavāda). [GU 2024]

Answer: Sāṁkhya ontology is rooted in Satkāryavāda, the doctrine that an effect pre-exists implicitly within its material cause prior to manifestation. Causal operations do not bring a non-existent entity into existence; rather, they actualize what was already potentially latent in the cause.

In the Sāṁkhyakārikā, Īśvarakṛṣṇa provides five classical proofs to establish Satkāryavāda:

    1. Asadakaraṇāt: Non-being cannot be produced; what is inherently non-existent can never be actualized (e.g., oil cannot be pressed from sand).

    2. Upādānagrahaṇāt: An appropriate material cause must be selected to produce a specific effect (e.g., milk is required to produce curd).

    3. Sarvasambhavābhāvāt: All things cannot be produced from all things; causality exhibits determinate regularity.

    4. Śaktasya Śakyakaraṇāt: A cause produces only that effect for which it possesses the inherent potentiality or causal efficiency.

    5. Kāraṇabhāvācca: The effect is substantially identical to its material cause (e.g., cloth is substantially identical to the interwoven threads).

This doctrine takes the specific form of Prakṛti-Pariṇāmavāda, affirming that the entire phenomenal universe is a real transformation (pariṇāma) of the primordial material cause, Mūla-Prakṛti.

    2. Discuss the concept of God in Yoga Philosophy. [GU 2024]

Answer: The Yoga system accepts the twenty-five non-theistic categories of Sāṁkhya while incorporating Īśvara (God) as an independent twenty-sixth category, earning the system the designation Seśvara Sāṁkhya. In the Yogasūtra, God is defined as: "Kleśa-karma-vipākāśayair aparāmṛṣṭaḥ puruṣa-viśeṣa Īśvaraḥ". God is a unique Puruṣa who remains eternally unaffected by afflictions (kleśas), actions (karmas), fruitions (vipāka), and latent impressions (āśayas).

The key characteristics of God in Yoga philosophy include:

    • Non-Creator Status: God is neither the material nor the efficient creator of the universe; cosmic evolution occurs spontaneously via the mutual proximity of Puruṣa and Prakṛti.

    • Primordial Teacher: God is the omniscient, primordial Guru of all ancient teachers (pūrveṣām api guruḥ), unconditioned by historical time.

    • Soteriological and Pragmatic Role: The primary function of God in Yoga is practical. Devotion and total surrender to God (Īśvara-praṇidhāna) tranquilize the modifications of the mind, subdue egoism, and accelerate the attainment of meditative absorption (Samādhi). The sacred syllable Praṇava (Oṁ) represents His verbal signifier.

    3. Elucidate the realities accepted in Sāṁkhya philosophy (The 25 Tattvas). [GU 2024]

Answer: Sāṁkhya philosophy organizes all reality into twenty-five ultimate ontological principles (tattvas), categorized into four groups based on their causal and productive functions:

    1. Prakṛti (Root Cause alone): Mūla-Prakṛti is the primordial material cause of the universe; it is uncaused and productive.

    2. Prakṛti-Vikṛti (Cause and Effect): Seven principles that are both products of antecedent causes and causes of subsequent evolutes: Mahat (Intellect), Ahaṁkāra (Ego), and the five Tanmātras (subtle essences of sound, touch, form, taste, and smell).

    3. Vikṛti (Effect alone): Sixteen principles that are mere evolutes/effects, lacking the capacity to generate new ontological categories: the five cognitive senses (Jñānendriyas), the five conative senses (Karmendriyas), the internal sensory mind (Manas), and the five gross elements (Mahābhūtas—Earth, Water, Fire, Air, and Ether).

    4. Anubhaya / Na Prakṛtiḥ Na Vikṛtiḥ (Neither Cause nor Effect): Puruṣa (the conscious Self), which is transcendent, unproduced, inactive, and unproducing.

The evolutionary unfoldment proceeds from the proximity of Puruṣa and Prakṛti, evolving sequentially from Mahat down to the gross physical elements.

    4. Give an account of Yoga Psychology. [GU 2024]

Answer: Yoga psychology centers on the structural and functional analysis of Citta (mind-stuff), which comprises the integrated faculties of Buddhi (intellect), Ahaṁkāra (ego), and Manas (lower sensory mind). When external objects are perceived, the Citta assumes the form of those objects; these structural modifications are termed Cittavṛttis.

Yoga psychology delineates five mental levels (Cittabhūmis):

    1. Kṣipta (Restless): Dominated by Rajas, making the mind turbulent and unstable.

    2. Mūḍha (Torpid): Dominated by Tamas, characterized by ignorance, lethargy, and delusion.

    3. Vikṣipta (Distracted): Characterized by intermittent Sattva, but disrupted by fluctuating Rajasic desires.

    4. Ekāgra (Focused): Sattva-dominated; the mind remains concentrated on a chosen object.

    5. Niruddha (Restrained): All mental modifications are arrested, leaving only latent impressions.

The mental modifications (vṛttis) are classified into five forms: Pramāṇa (valid cognition), Viparyaya (error), Vikalpa (conceptual construction), Nidrā (sleep), and Smṛti (memory). The ultimate goal of Yoga is the cessation of these fluctuations through practice (abhyāsa) and detachment (vairāgya).

    5. Present the arguments for the Plurality of Puruṣas (Puruṣabahutva) in Sāṁkhya.

Answer: Sāṁkhya rejects the absolute non-dual monism of Advaita Vedānta, maintaining the ontological plurality of individual conscious selves (Puruṣas). In the Sāṁkhyakārikā, Īśvarakṛṣṇa advances three classical dialectical arguments to demonstrate this plurality:

    1. Janana-maraṇa-karaṇānāṁ pratiniyamāt (Distribution of birth, death, and faculties): If there were only one universal Puruṣa, the birth or death of one individual would entail the birth or death of all; sensory impairment (such as blindness) in one person would affect all beings. Because births, deaths, and physical capacities are individually distinct, Puruṣas must be plural.

    2. Ayugapat-pravṛtteśca (Non-simultaneity of activity): Human actions are not universally synchronized. When one person is engaged in study, another may be asleep or engaged in physical labor. This disparity in voluntary activity proves the multiplicity of conscious agents.

    3. Traiguṇyaviparyayācca (Differences in Guṇa proportions): Individuals possess varying endowments of the three Guṇas. Some are predominantly sattvic (virtuous and wise), others rajasic (active and ambitious), and others tamasic (lethargic and ignorant).

These empirical distributions necessitate the acceptance of a multiplicity of distinct Puruṣas.

    6. Discuss the Three Guṇas (Sattva, Rajas, Tamas) and their characteristics.

Answer: In Sāṁkhya metaphysics, the Guṇas are not accidental qualities in the Nyāya-Vaiśeṣika sense; rather, they are the substantive constituents that compose Prakṛti.

    1. Sattva: Characterized by lightness (laghu) and illumination (prakāśaka). It is the principle of purity, clarity, intelligence, and joy. It is visually symbolized by the color white.

    2. Rajas: Characterized by excitation (upaṣṭambhaka) and dynamic mobility (cala). It generates motion, passion, exertion, ambition, and pain. It is symbolized by the color red.

    3. Tamas: Characterized by heaviness (guru) and obstruction/covering (varaṇaka). It induces inertia, lethargy, ignorance, and delusion. It is symbolized by the color black.

These three Guṇas exist in perpetual interplay. Although possessing opposite natures, they cooperate to produce the phenomena of the empirical universe—analogous to how an oil lamp functions through the cooperation of oil, wick, and fire. The equilibrium of the Guṇas constitutes unmanifest Prakṛti, while their disruption initiates cosmic evolution.

    7. Provide a concise overview of Patañjali’s Eightfold Path of Yoga (Aṣṭāṅga Yoga).

Answer: To systematically arrest mental modifications and achieve Kaivalya, Maharṣi Patañjali outlines an eightfold discipline known as Aṣṭāṅga Yoga:

    1. Yama: Social and moral restraints—Ahiṁsā (non-violence), Satya (truthfulness), Asteya (non-stealing), Brahmacarya (continence), and Aparigraha (non-possessiveness).

    2. Niyama: Personal spiritual observances—Śauca (purity), Santoṣa (contentment), Tapas (austerity), Svādhyāya (self-study/scriptural reflection), and Īśvarapraṇidhāna (surrender to God).

    3. Āsana: Stable and comfortable physical postures that stabilize bodily awareness.

    4. Prāṇāyāma: Regulated control of inhalation, retention, and exhalation of breath.

    5. Pratyāhāra: Inward withdrawal of the senses from their corresponding external objects.

    6. Dhāraṇā: Unbroken concentration and fixation of the mind on a designated point or object.

    7. Dhyāna: Uninterrupted, continuous meditative contemplation of the chosen object.

    8. Samādhi: Complete cognitive absorption wherein the meditator, the act of meditation, and the object merge, revealing the true nature of consciousness.

    8. Describe the Sāṁkhya Theory of Cosmic Evolution.

Answer: The Sāṁkhya evolutionary theory explains the teleological and mechanical emergence of the cosmos from unconscious Prakṛti. When the unattached consciousness of Puruṣa comes into proximity (saṁyoga) with Prakṛti, the equilibrium of the three Guṇas is disrupted, initiating cosmic evolution.

The evolutionary hierarchy unfolds as follows:

    • The first cosmic evolute is Mahat (the Great Principle or cosmic intelligence), which on an individual level functions as Buddhi.

    • From Mahat emerges Ahaṁkāra (the principle of individuation/ego).

    • Ahaṁkāra bifurcates based on the dominant Guṇa:

      • From Sāttvika (Vaikārika) Ahaṁkāra arise the eleven internal and external organs: the sensory mind (Manas), the five cognitive senses (Jñānendriyas), and the five motor organs (Karmendriyas).

      • From Tāmasa (Bhūtādi) Ahaṁkāra emerge the five subtle essences (Tanmātras—sound, touch, form, taste, and odor).

      • Rājasika Ahaṁkāra provides dynamic energy to both transformations.

    • From the five Tanmātras evolve the five gross material elements (Mahābhūtas—Ether, Air, Fire, Water, Earth).

This evolutionary process is not random; it serves the twin teleological purposes of Puruṣa: empirical experience (bhoga) and spiritual liberation (apavarga).

    9. Explain the Sāṁkhya concept of Liberation (Kaivalya).

Answer: In Sāṁkhya philosophy, Kaivalya (liberation) is defined as the absolute, irreversible termination of the three types of suffering (Trividha Duḥkha). The Puruṣa is inherently free, pure, unattached, and conscious. Bondage is an experiential error resulting from non-discrimination (aviveka), wherein Puruṣa mistakenly identifies with the intellect (Buddhi) and its transformations.

When discriminative knowledge (Vivekakhyāti) is attained, Puruṣa realizes its absolute ontological distinctness from Prakṛti. Upon this realization, Prakṛti ceases her activity toward that Puruṣa, and the Self rests in its transcendent isolation.

Sāṁkhya distinguishes two stages of liberation:

    1. Jīvanmukti (Liberation while living): Attainment of discriminative knowledge during physical embodiment. The body continues to function until the momentum of past activated karmas (prārabdha karma) is exhausted, analogous to a potter's wheel that continues spinning after the potter stops driving it.

    2. Videhamukti (Disembodied Liberation): Final liberation achieved upon physical death, marked by the total dissolution of the psycho-physical organism, ensuring perpetual, unconditioned freedom.

    10. Discuss the relationship between Kriyāyoga and the Kleśas in Yoga Philosophy.

Answer: In the Sādhana Pāda of the Yogasūtra, Patañjali prescribes Kriyāyoga for spiritual aspirants to purify the mind, cultivate Samādhi, and attenuate the five core afflictions (Pañca-Kleśas). Kriyāyoga consists of Tapas (disciplined self-restraint), Svādhyāya (reflective scriptural study), and Īśvarapraṇidhāna (devotional alignment with God).

The five Kleśas are the root causes of worldly suffering and karmic bondage:

    1. Avidyā (Ignorance): The foundational root affliction, mistaking the impermanent for the permanent, the impure for the pure, and the non-self for the Self.

    2. Asmitā (Egoism): The erroneous identification of the seer (Puruṣa) with the instrument of seeing (Buddhi).

    3. Rāga (Attachment): Craving for pleasurable objects and experiences.

    4. Dveṣa (Aversion): Repulsion or hostility toward painful conditions.

    5. Abhiniveśa (Clinging to Life): The instinctive fear of death rooted in subconscious impressions.

Through the sustained practice of Kriyāyoga, these afflictions are weakened (tanukaraṇa), rendering them like scorched seeds (dagdha-bīja) that can no longer sprout into psychological disturbances, clearing the way for transformative meditative absorption.
