    Answer: Nanomaterials are materials having at least one characteristic dimension approximately in the 1–100 nm range, where size-dependent properties become important.

    11. What is a smart material?

    Answer: A smart material is a material that can respond to an external stimulus such as temperature, stress, electric field, or magnetic field by changing one or more of its properties.

    12. What is sound?

    Answer: Sound is a mechanical wave produced by the vibration of a source and transmitted through a material medium.

    13. What is frequency of sound?

    Answer: Frequency is the number of complete vibrations made by a sound-producing body per second. Its SI unit is hertz (Hz).

    14. What determines the pitch of a musical sound?

    Answer: The frequency of vibration primarily determines the pitch of a musical sound. Higher frequency produces a higher pitch.

    15. What is resonance?

    Answer: Resonance is the phenomenon in which a system vibrates with large amplitude when the frequency of an external periodic force is equal or very close to its natural frequency.

    Part B: Short Answer Questions (15 Questions — 2 Marks Each)

    1. Distinguish between solids, liquids and gases.

    Answer: Solids have a definite shape and volume because their particles are closely packed and strongly bound. Liquids have a definite volume but no definite shape and can flow. Gases have neither definite shape nor volume because their particles are widely separated and move relatively freely. These differences arise from intermolecular forces and particle motion.

    2. What are elastic and plastic deformation?

    Answer: Elastic deformation is a temporary change in shape or size that disappears when the applied force is removed, provided the elastic limit is not exceeded. Plastic deformation is a permanent deformation that remains even after removing the force. The transition depends on the material and the magnitude of applied stress.

    3. What are stress and strain?

    Answer: Stress is the internal restoring force developed per unit area when an external force deforms a material:

    σ = F / A

    Strain is the fractional change in dimension: ε = ΔL / L. Stress has the SI unit pascal (Pa), whereas strain is dimensionless.

    4. What is Young's modulus?

    Answer: Young's modulus measures the resistance of a material to longitudinal deformation. It is defined as the ratio of longitudinal stress to longitudinal strain within the elastic limit:

    Y = Longitudinal stress / Longitudinal strain

    A larger Young's modulus indicates greater resistance to stretching or compression.

    5. Explain optical emission and absorption.

    Answer: Optical absorption occurs when matter takes up energy from incident electromagnetic radiation, usually at specific wavelengths corresponding to allowed energy transitions. Optical emission occurs when an excited atom, molecule, or material releases energy as electromagnetic radiation while returning to a lower-energy state. Both processes are related to quantized energy levels.

    6. What are coherent sources? Why are they important in interference?

    Answer: Two sources are coherent when they emit waves of the same frequency and maintain a constant phase difference. Coherent sources are essential for producing a stable interference pattern. Ordinary independent light sources generally do not maintain a constant phase relationship and therefore do not produce sustained, clearly observable interference fringes.

    7. Differentiate between interference and diffraction.

    Answer: Interference generally results from the superposition of waves originating from two or more coherent sources, whereas diffraction arises from the superposition of wavelets originating from different parts of the same wavefront or aperture. Diffraction is especially noticeable when the aperture or obstacle size is comparable to the wavelength.

    8. What is polarization and what does it indicate about light?

    Answer: Polarization restricts the transverse vibrations of light to a particular direction. Since only transverse waves can be polarized, polarization provides evidence that ordinary light behaves as a transverse electromagnetic wave. Polarization can be produced using polarizing materials and is useful in optical instruments and scientific applications.

    9. Mention two important properties of nanomaterials.

    Answer: Nanomaterials often possess properties significantly different from their bulk counterparts because of their very small size and large surface-to-volume ratio. They may exhibit enhanced mechanical strength, unusual optical behaviour, modified electrical properties, or increased chemical reactivity. Their properties depend strongly on particle size, shape, and surface structure.

    10. Why do nanomaterials show unusual properties?

    Answer: Nanomaterials have a very large surface area compared with their volume, so surface atoms make a significant contribution to their behaviour. At nanoscale dimensions, quantum effects can also become important. Consequently, optical, electrical, magnetic, mechanical, and chemical properties may differ substantially from those of the corresponding bulk material.

    11. What are smart materials? Give two examples.

    Answer: Smart materials respond in a controlled and useful manner to changes in their surroundings or to external stimuli. Examples include shape-memory alloys, which can recover a predetermined shape after suitable heating, and piezoelectric materials, which develop electrical polarization when mechanically stressed and can also deform under an applied electric field.

    12. What are the characteristics of a musical sound?

    Answer: A musical sound is mainly characterized by pitch, loudness, and quality (timbre). Pitch is associated primarily with frequency, loudness with the intensity or amplitude of vibration, and quality with the waveform and harmonic composition. These characteristics enable us to distinguish sounds produced by different musical instruments.

    13. What is an overtone?

    Answer: An overtone is any frequency component of a musical sound above the fundamental frequency. The first overtone is the next higher frequency component after the fundamental. Overtones may or may not correspond directly to successive harmonics, depending on the vibrating system and its boundary conditions.

    14. What is the role of an air column in wind instruments?

    Answer: In wind instruments, an air column undergoes vibration and produces standing waves. The allowed frequencies depend on the length and boundary conditions of the air column. Changing the effective length of the vibrating air column changes the resonant frequency and hence the pitch of the sound produced.

    15. What is resonance in a musical instrument?

    Answer: Resonance occurs when an external vibration excites a system at or near one of its natural frequencies, producing a large-amplitude vibration. In musical instruments, resonance helps strengthen the sound produced by the vibrating source. The body or air cavity of an instrument can therefore significantly influence its loudness and tone.

    Part C: Long Answer Questions (5 Questions — 5 Marks Each)

    1. Explain the states of matter and the basic mechanical properties related to the strength of materials.

    Answer: Matter commonly exists in three physical states: solid, liquid, and gas. In a solid, particles are closely packed and experience relatively strong intermolecular forces. Therefore, solids possess definite shape and volume and strongly resist deformation. In liquids, particles can move relative to one another, so liquids have a definite volume but no definite shape. In gases, particles are widely separated and move freely; consequently, gases have neither definite shape nor definite volume.

    The mechanical behaviour of materials is studied in terms of their response to external forces. Stress is the internal restoring force per unit area developed in a material:

    σ = F / A

    Strain is the fractional deformation produced: ε = ΔL / L. Within the elastic limit, stress is proportional to strain according to Hooke's law. The ratio of stress to the corresponding strain gives an elastic modulus. For longitudinal deformation, this is Young's modulus:

    Y = Longitudinal stress / Longitudinal strain

    A material is considered strong when it can withstand a large applied stress without failure. Elasticity, strength, stiffness, ductility, and brittleness are important mechanical characteristics. These properties determine the suitability of materials for engineering, construction, tools, and everyday applications.

    2. Explain optical emission and absorption and discuss the basic idea of interference, diffraction and polarization of light.

    Answer: Optical properties describe how materials interact with electromagnetic radiation, particularly visible and nearby wavelengths. Optical absorption occurs when a material takes up energy from incident radiation. Atoms, molecules, or electrons can absorb photons when the photon energy is suitable for an allowed transition between energy states. Optical emission occurs when an excited system loses energy and emits electromagnetic radiation. These processes are important in spectroscopy, lighting, lasers, and optical materials.

    Interference is produced when coherent waves overlap. According to the principle of superposition, their amplitudes combine. Constructive interference produces increased intensity, while destructive interference produces reduced intensity. A stable interference pattern requires a constant phase relationship between the waves.

    Diffraction is the spreading or bending of waves when they pass through a narrow aperture or around an obstacle. It becomes significant when the dimensions involved are comparable to the wavelength. Diffraction demonstrates the wave nature of light.

    Polarization is the restriction of the vibrations of light to a particular direction transverse to propagation. Since electromagnetic light waves are transverse, they can be polarized. Polarization is used in optical instruments, photography, communication systems, and stress analysis. Together, interference, diffraction, and polarization provide important evidence for the wave nature and transverse character of light.

    3. What are nanomaterials? Explain their characteristic properties and important applications.

    Answer: Nanomaterials are materials in which at least one characteristic dimension lies approximately in the range of 1–100 nanometres. At this scale, materials can exhibit properties that differ significantly from those of the same substances in bulk form. Two major reasons are their very large surface-to-volume ratio and the increasing importance of size-dependent or quantum effects.

    A large fraction of atoms in a nanomaterial can be present at or near the surface. As a result, surface-related phenomena such as chemical reactivity and catalytic activity can become highly significant. The optical, electrical, magnetic, thermal, and mechanical properties of nanomaterials may also depend strongly on their size, shape, and structure. For example, some nanoparticles show size-dependent optical absorption and emission. Nanostructured materials may also possess useful combinations of strength, light weight, electrical conductivity, or chemical activity.

    Nanomaterials have numerous applications. They are used in catalysis, sensors, electronics, energy-storage devices, protective coatings, environmental technologies, and biomedical research. Nanostructured materials are also important in the development of modern optical and electronic devices.

    However, their behaviour is strongly dependent on composition, particle size, surface characteristics, and method of preparation. Therefore, careful characterization and controlled use are essential when developing nanomaterial-based technologies.

    4. What are smart materials? Explain their working principle with suitable examples.

    Answer: Smart materials are materials capable of sensing changes in their environment or responding to an external stimulus by undergoing a useful and often reversible change in one or more physical properties. The stimulus may be temperature, mechanical stress, electric field, magnetic field, light, or chemical conditions.

    One important example is a shape-memory alloy. Such a material can be deformed under suitable conditions and can recover a previously defined shape when subjected to an appropriate temperature change. This behaviour is associated with a reversible structural transformation within the material.

    Another important class is piezoelectric materials. When mechanical stress is applied to a piezoelectric material, electric charges appear on its surfaces. Conversely, an applied electric field can produce mechanical deformation. This property makes piezoelectric materials useful in sensors, actuators, ultrasonic devices, and other technologies.

    Smart materials are valuable because their response can be used to perform sensing, control, or actuation functions. They are employed in areas such as robotics, aerospace systems, vibration control, medical devices, sensors, and precision instruments.

    The main feature distinguishing smart materials from ordinary materials is their ability to respond functionally to external conditions. Their applications depend on selecting a material whose response is appropriate for the required stimulus and operating environment.

    5. Explain sound and discuss the basic principles of musical instruments.

    Answer: Sound is a mechanical wave produced by the vibration of a material body and propagated through a medium. Since sound requires a material medium, it cannot propagate through an ideal vacuum. In gases, ordinary sound waves are predominantly longitudinal, with successive compressions and rarefactions travelling through the medium.

    The important characteristics of a musical sound are pitch, loudness, and quality or timbre. Pitch depends mainly on frequency: a higher frequency corresponds to a higher pitch. Loudness is related to the intensity of sound and, for a given system, is associated with the amplitude of vibration. Timbre depends on the waveform and the relative contributions of the fundamental and overtones.

    Musical instruments produce sound through different vibrating systems. String instruments produce sound through vibrating strings, while wind instruments involve vibration of an air column. In percussion instruments, stretched membranes or solid bodies are set into vibration.

    The dimensions and boundary conditions of the vibrating system determine its natural frequencies. Resonance is particularly important because a vibrating air column or instrument body can respond strongly when driven near its natural frequency. This increases the amplitude and makes the sound more prominent.

    Thus, the physical principles of vibration, standing waves, resonance, frequency, and harmonics form the basis of sound production in musical instruments.
