    Unit 2

    Non-Vedic Thought

    1-Mark Questions (15 Questions) :

    1. Do the Cārvākas accept the authority of the Vedas? [GU 2024]

Answer: No, the Cārvākas completely reject the divine origin, infallibility, and authority of the Vedas.

    2. According to Jainism, is liberation the annihilation of the soul? [GU 2023]

Answer: False; liberation (mokṣa) in Jainism is the complete dissociation of karmic matter from the soul, leading to its pure, pristine state, rather than its annihilation.

    3. What is the only valid source of knowledge (pramāṇa) according to Cārvāka philosophy?

    Answer: Perception (Pratyakṣa).

    4. What does the doctrine of Anattāvāda (No-Soul) signify in Buddhism?

Answer: The rejection of any permanent, unchanging, and eternal substantial soul or self.

    5. Name the Tri-ratna (Three Jewels) of Jainism.

Answer: Right Faith (Samyak Darśana), Right Knowledge (Samyak Jñāna), and Right Conduct (Samyak Cāritra).

    6. With which Noble Truth is the Noble Eightfold Path associated in Buddhism?

Answer: Earth (Kṣiti), Water (Ap), Fire (Tejas), and Air (Marut).

    8. What is the Buddhist doctrine asserting that all conditioned entities are transient and momentary?

Answer: The Doctrine of Momentariness (Kṣaṇikavāda or Anityavāda).

    9. Which core epistemological doctrine in Jainism addresses the relativistic nature of judgments?

Answer: Syādvāda (the doctrine of conditioned predication).

    10. Why do the Cārvākas reject 'Ether' (Ākāśa) as a fundamental material element?

Answer: Because ether cannot be perceived through sense perception; it is only inferred.

    11. What is the Third Noble Truth of Buddhism? [GU 2024]

Answer: Dukkha Nirodha (The cessation of suffering is attainable).

    12. How is Karma conceived in Jain philosophy?

Answer: As subtle, physical material particles (Karma-Pudgala) that adhere to the soul.

    13. What is the central ethical principle of Cārvāka philosophy?

Answer: Materialistic Hedonism (Kāma or sensual pleasure is the supreme end of human life).

    14. What are the primary causes of worldly bondage in Jainism?

Answer: Āsrava (inflow of karmic matter into the soul) and Kaṣāya (passions: anger, pride, deceit, and greed).

    15. What is the literal meaning of the term Nirvāṇa in Buddhism?

Answer: "Blowing out" or "extinction" (specifically the extinction of the flames of desire, hatred, and delusion).

    2-Mark Questions (~50 words each) (15 Questions) :

    1. Name two Piṭakas of Buddhist canonical literature. [GU 2024]

Answer: Two primary Piṭakas of the Buddhist canon (Tripitaka) are:

    • Vinaya Piṭaka: Deals with the monastic rules, discipline, and code of conduct for monks and nuns.

    • Sutta Piṭaka: Contains the core doctrinal teachings, discourses, and sermons delivered by Gautama Buddha.

    2. Name any two Great Vows (Mahāvratas) of Jainism. [GU 2023]

Answer: Two essential Mahāvratas prescribed for Jain ascetics are:

    • Ahiṃsā (Non-violence): Absolute non-injury to any living being in thought, word, and action.

    • Satya (Truthfulness): Speaking wholesome, harmless, and precise truth under all conditions.

    3. What are the two types of bondage recognized in Jainism? [GU 2023]

Answer: Jainism divides bondage (Bandha) into two levels:

    • Bhāva-bandha (Internal Bondage): The mental modification or impure psychic state characterized by passions and attachments.

    • Dravya-bandha (Physical Bondage): The actual influx and interpenetration of material karmic particles into the soul (Jīva).

    4. Name any four Khandhas (Aggregates) into which Buddhism analyzes an individual. [GU 2023]

Answer: Buddhism analyzes an empirical individual into five aggregates; four of them are:

    • Rūpa: Physical/material form.

    • Vedanā: Sensations or feelings (pleasant, unpleasant, neutral).

    • Saññā: Perceptions or conceptual recognition.

    • Saṅkhāra: Mental formations and volitional dispositions.

    5. Why do the Cārvākas reject Inference (Anumāna) as an independent source of valid knowledge?

Answer: Cārvākas argue that inference relies entirely on Vyāpti (an unconditional universal relation between the middle term and the major term). Since Vyāpti cannot be established conclusively across all past, present, and future instances via direct perception, inference remains uncertain and unprovable.

    6. What is the Buddhist concept of Impermanence (Anityatā / Kṣaṇikavāda)? [GU 2023]

Answer: Impermanence denotes that all conditioned phenomena are perpetually in flux. Nothing possesses an enduring essence or permanent core. Every entity arises in dependence on causes and perishes in the next instant, existing as an ongoing dynamic causal stream.

    7. Distinguish between Āsrava and Saṃvara in Jain philosophy.

    Answer:

    • Āsrava: The process through which subtle karmic matter flows toward and enters the soul due to bodily, verbal, and mental activities.

    • Saṃvara: The conscious stoppage or prevention of any new incoming karmic matter through self-restraint and moral vows.

    8. How do the Cārvākas explain consciousness and the soul (Dehātma-vāda)?

Answer: Cārvākas reject an immaterial soul, equating the soul with the living body endowed with consciousness. Consciousness is an emergent quality arising from the specific material combination of the four elements (earth, water, fire, air), just as an intoxicating property emerges from fermented yeast.

    9. Outline the first two Noble Truths of Buddhism. [GU 2024]

    Answer:

    • Dukkha Satya: Life is pervaded by suffering; birth, aging, illness, separation from the pleasant, and union with the unpleasant are all suffering.

    • Dukkha Samudaya Satya: Suffering has an identifiable cause, which is rooted in craving (Taṇhā) and ignorance (Avidyā).

    10. What is Nirjarā in Jain philosophy?

Answer: Nirjarā is the systematic purging, burning off, and exhaustion of previously accumulated karmic particles from the soul through the practice of rigorous austerities, penance (tapas), and mental discipline, paving the direct way to mokṣa.

    11. What is the fundamental objective of Cārvāka ethics? [GU 2023]

Answer: Cārvāka ethics advocates psychological and ethical hedonism. Rejecting afterlife, karma, and liberation, it asserts that maximizing immediate sensory pleasure (Kāma) and minimizing pain in this single earthly life is the supreme goal of human existence.

    12. Enumerate any four limbs of the Buddhist Eightfold Path (Aṣṭāṅgika Mārga).

Answer: Four essential factors of the Eightfold Path are:

    • Right View (Sammā Diṭṭhi)

    • Right Resolve (Sammā Saṅkappa)

    • Right Speech (Sammā Vācā)

    • Right Action (Sammā Kammanta).

    13. What is the nature of Mokṣa in Jainism?

Answer: In Jainism, Mokṣa is the total liberation of the soul from all material karmas. Ascending to the apex of the universe (Siddhaśīlā), the liberated soul abides eternally in its pure state, possessing infinite knowledge, perception, power, and bliss (Ananta-Catuṣṭaya).

    14. Explain the Cārvāka doctrine of Naturalism (Svabhāvavāda).

Answer: Svabhāvavāda asserts that the universe and its diverse phenomena are produced solely by the inherent nature and spontaneous mechanical interaction of the four material elements. There is no requirement for a conscious creator, transcendent God, or unseen moral destiny (Adṛṣṭa).

    15. State the foundational formula of Dependent Origination (Pratītyasamutpāda).

Answer: The causal formula states: "Asmin sati idaṃ bhavati"—"When this exists, that comes to be; with the arising of this, that arises." It signifies that all phenomena arise strictly conditioned by antecedent causes and conditions, without any uncaused primary cause.

    5-Mark Questions (~200 words each) :

    1. Explain the Four Noble Truths (Catur-ārya-satya) of Buddhism. [GU 2024]

Answer: The Four Noble Truths form the diagnostic and therapeutic foundation of Gautama Buddha's philosophical teachings:

    • The Truth of Suffering (Dukkha): Worldly existence is inherently characterized by dissatisfaction, transience, and pain. Birth, old age, disease, death, sorrow, and despair are inescapable features of conditioned life. Even empirical pleasure is fleeting and therefore inherently suffering (Pariṇāma-dukkha).

    • The Truth of the Origin of Suffering (Samudaya): Suffering does not arise uncaused; its root cause is craving (Taṇhā)—the thirst for sensual gratification, existence, and annihilation—fed by primal ignorance (Avidyā) regarding the true nature of reality.

    • The Truth of the Cessation of Suffering (Nirodha): Because suffering depends on causes, removing the cause eliminates the effect. Complete eradication of craving and ignorance leads to Nirvāṇa, the total cessation of suffering and rebirth.

    • The Truth of the Path (Mārga): The practical method for realizing Nirvāṇa is the Middle Way, formulated as the Noble Eightfold Path (Aṣṭāṅgika Mārga). It systematically covers ethical conduct (Śīla), mental discipline (Samādhi), and intuitive wisdom (Prajñā).

    2. Critically examine the Buddhist Doctrine of Impermanence (Anityavāda / Kṣaṇikavāda). [GU 2023]

Answer: The Buddhist doctrine of impermanence maintains that all compounded and conditioned things are devoid of permanence, enduring substance, or static identity. Reality is dynamic process rather than static being.

    • The Criterion of Existence: Early Buddhism links reality to dynamic causal efficacy (Arthakriyākāritva). An entity is real if and only if it produces an effect. A permanent, unchanging entity cannot produce effects either sequentially (since its nature does not alter across moments) or simultaneously (which would exhaust its efficacy). Thus, existence is intrinsically momentary (kṣaṇika).

    • The Metaphor of the River and Flame: To illustrate this continuous flux, Buddhism uses the analogy of a flowing river and a burning lamp flame. A river appears continuous, yet every drop of water passing a given point is entirely new each second. Similarly, a flame is a succession of vanishing combustion events rather than a single enduring entity.

    • Doctrinal Significance: Kṣaṇikavāda provides the metaphysical foundation for non-attachment. Recognizing that all objects of desire and the self itself perish at every instant dismantles clinging, eliminating the existential basis of suffering.

    3. Discuss the Buddhist Doctrine of No-Soul (Anattāvāda).

Answer: Anattāvāda (or Anātmavāda) is one of the most distinctive doctrines of Buddhism, rejecting the Upanishadic concept of a permanent, indivisible, and immortal self (Ātman).

    • Deconstruction into Aggregates (Pañcaskandha): Buddhism asserts that what is empirically called a "person" or "self" is not a unified metaphysical substance, but an interdependent cluster of five ever-changing psycho-physical aggregates:

      1. Rūpa (Material form and body)

      2. Vedanā (Affective feelings and sensations)

      3. Saññā (Cognitive perceptions and labels)

      4. Saṅkhāra (Volitional drives, habits, and mental formations)

      5. Viññāṇa (Flow of conscious awareness).

    • The Chariot Analogy: As detailed in the Milindapañha, just as the word "chariot" is merely a conventional designation for an assembly of wheels, axle, chassis, and pole, the term "individual" is merely a practical label for the operational collection of the five skandhas. There is no ghost in the machine.

    • Soteriological Value: Believing in an enduring "I" generates egoism, possessiveness ("mine"), craving, and suffering. Realizing the truth of Anattā dispels ego-delusion and unlocks spiritual freedom.

    4. Explain the concept and dimensions of Nirvāṇa in Buddhism. [GU 2024]

Answer: In Buddhist philosophy, Nirvāṇa is the ultimate soteriological goal, marking the final liberation from the cycle of birth, death, and rebirth (Saṃsāra).

    • Nature of Nirvāṇa: Etymologically meaning "to extinguish," Nirvāṇa is not the metaphysical destruction of existence or nihilistic void, but the total extinction of the three fires of delusion: greed (lobha), hatred (dosa), and ignorance (moha). It represents the unconditioned state (Asaṅkhata Dhātu), transcendent of ordinary space, time, and conceptual relativity.

    • Two Stages of Nirvāṇa:

      • Sopādhiśeṣa-Nirvāṇa (Nirvāṇa with remainder): Achieved during one's lifetime (as by the Buddha under the Bodhi tree). Mental defilements are permanently uprooted, producing profound peace and enlightenment, while the physical body and sensory faculties continue to function until life ends.

      • Anupādhiśeṣa-Nirvāṇa / Parinirvāṇa (Nirvāṇa without remainder): Realized at the biological death of an enlightened being (Arhat). The psycho-physical aggregates dissolve entirely without generating future rebirth, bringing an absolute end to conditioned existence.

    • Nirvāṇa is the realization of supreme peace, unshakeable freedom, and transcendent insight.

    5. Provide a systematic account of the Jaina Theory of Karma.

Answer: Jainism presents a unique, realistic, and mechanistic understanding of Karma, viewing it not merely as an abstract principle or unseen force, but as fine, physical material substance (Karma-Pudgala).

    • Mechanism of Influx: The soul (Jīva) is inherently pure, luminous, and omniscient. However, when the soul acts through body, speech, and mind under the influence of passions (Kaṣāyas like anger, pride, deceit, and greed), a psychic stickiness is produced. This attracts subtle material karmic particles from the cosmos, which infiltrate and coat the soul like dust on a moist cloth.

    • Classification of Karmas: Karmas are divided into eight categories grouped under two major divisions:

      • Ghātiyā Karmas (Obscuring): Directly obscure the soul's intrinsic spiritual capacities—such as Jñānāvaraṇīya (obscuring knowledge), Darśanāvaraṇīya (obscuring perception), Mohanīya (deluding moral will), and Antarāya (obstructing energy).

      • Aghātiyā Karmas (Non-obscuring): Determine the physical circumstances of embodiment—including Vedanīya (feeling), Nāma (body type), Gotra (status), and Āyus (lifespan).

    • Liberation: Absolute freedom demands the prevention of new karmas (Saṃvara) and the thorough burning off of past karmas (Nirjarā).

    6. Explain the concepts of Bondage (Bandha) and Liberation (Mokṣa) in Jain Philosophy. [GU 2023]

    Answer:

    • The Concept of Bondage (Bandha): In Jain metaphysics, bondage is the union of the conscious soul (Jīva) with unconscious, material karmic matter (Ajīva/Pudgala). Ignorance and passions cause an influx (Āsrava) of karmic atoms that adhere to the soul. This bondage is twofold: Bhāva-bandha (the subjective mental defilement) and Dravya-bandha (the objective material binding of karmic particles to the soul). Consequently, the soul remains trapped in empirical transmigratory life (Saṃsāra).

    • The Process of Liberation (Mokṣa): Liberation is the complete, irreversible dissociation of the soul from all karmic matter. It is achieved through a systematic two-stage spiritual practice:

      1. Saṃvara: Halting the inflow of fresh karmas by observing vows, vigilance, and moral discipline.

      2. Nirjarā: Eliminating and consuming existing, stored karmas through internal and external austerities (Tapas).

    • The State of Mukti: Upon complete purification, the soul regains its natural state of Ananta-Catuṣṭaya (Infinite Knowledge, Vision, Power, and Bliss). Being lighter than matter, it ascends to the highest realm of existence (Siddhaśīlā) to reside in eternal, omniscient isolation (Kaivalya).

    7. Examine the Jaina Doctrine of Five Great Vows (Pañca-Mahāvratas). [GU 2024]

Answer: The Pañca-Mahāvratas represent the supreme ethical code in Jainism, observed rigorously and unconditionally by monks and nuns to halt karmic accumulation and attain spiritual purification:

    • Ahiṃsā (Non-Violence): The cardinal vow of Jainism. It requires total non-injury toward all living entities—from complex beings to microscopic life—committed directly, caused through others, or consented to, across thought, speech, and physical action.

    • Satya (Truthfulness): Speaking uncompromised truth that is noble, wholesome, and free from anger, greed, or fear. Silence is prescribed when speaking the truth might cause harm to innocent beings.

    • Asteya (Non-Stealing): Never taking anything belonging to others without their explicit consent, encompassing intellectual, physical, and material property.

    • Brahmacarya (Celibacy/Chastity): Complete renunciation of all sexual activities, sensory indulgences, and lustful thoughts, redirecting psychic energy inward toward the self.

    • Aparigraha (Non-Possession/Non-Attachment): Complete detachment from and renunciation of all worldly possessions, wealth, and material ties, eliminating the psychological roots of greed and exploitation.

    8. Explain the Epistemological Position (Pramāṇa-vāda) of Cārvāka Philosophy. [GU 2024]

Answer: The Cārvāka school advances a radical, thoroughgoing empiricism, asserting that direct sensory perception (Pratyakṣa) is the only valid source of knowledge (Pramāṇa).

    • Primacy of Perception: Knowledge is valid only when verified directly by the external senses (Bāhya-pratyakṣa) or internal perception (Mānasa-pratyakṣa). What cannot be perceived through the senses cannot be philosophically affirmed as real.

    • Refutation of Inference (Anumāna-khaṇḍana): Cārvākas argue that inference depends on establishing an unconditional, invariant relation (Vyāpti) between the middle term (Hetu, e.g., smoke) and the major term (Sādhya, e.g., fire). However:

      • Perception cannot observe all instances of smoke and fire across past, present, and future.

      • Using inference to prove Vyāpti causes infinite regress (Anavasthā).

      • Testimony cannot guarantee it without falling into circular reasoning. Hence, inference is merely an unverified psychological expectation.

    • Rejection of Testimony (Śabda-khaṇḍana): Verbal testimony is not an independent pramāṇa. Testimony by fallible humans is unreliable, while the Vedas are human contrivances filled with contradictions, redundancies, and falsehoods designed for priestly livelihood.

    9. Discuss the Cārvāka Rejection of Transcendental and Metaphysical Entities.

Answer: Rooted in radical empiricism, the Cārvāka school systematically dismantles all metaphysical and supernatural concepts central to orthodox Indian traditions:

    • Rejection of God (Īśvara): God is unperceivable and therefore non-existent. The creation, maintenance, and destruction of the world do not require a cosmic designer. Material elements combine and dissolve according to their own inherent, spontaneous nature (Svabhāva).

    • Rejection of an Immortal Soul (Ātman): There is no independent, immaterial soul that survives bodily death. Consciousness is merely an emergent epiphenomenon of the physical body, dissolving completely when the body perishes into its four constituent elements.

    • Rejection of Afterlife, Heaven, and Hell (Paraloka): Because there is no surviving soul, concepts of transmigration, rebirth, heaven (Svarga), and hell (Naraka) are pure fictions concocted by scriptures to exploit the gullible.

    • Rejection of Unseen Moral Merit (Adṛṣṭa/Karma): There is no cosmic moral law rewarding virtue or punishing vice. Causality is purely physical and mechanical.

    10. Discuss the Ethical Outlook and Hedonism of Cārvāka Philosophy. [GU 2023]

Answer: Cārvāka ethics is characterized by rational materialism and psychological-ethical hedonism, summarized by the maxim: "Live happily as long as you live; borrow money and drink clarified butter (ghee); once the body is reduced to ashes, how can it ever return?"

    • Revaluation of the Puruṣārthas: Of the four traditional human goals (Dharma, Artha, Kāma, Mokṣa), Cārvāka rejects Dharma (religious rituals) and Mokṣa (liberation) as illusory. It recognizes Kāma (sensory and aesthetic pleasure) as the supreme end of human existence, with Artha (material wealth) serving as the practical means to secure that pleasure.

    • Realistic Hedonism: Cārvāka does not advocate reckless indulgence that invites ruin, but sensible enjoyment. In response to the ascetic objection that earthly pleasure is always mixed with pain, Cārvākas argue that sensible people do not throw away grain simply because it is covered in husk, nor do they refuse to eat fish because of bones.

    • Secular Realism: One should minimize pain and maximize present empirical happiness, living an enlightened, rational life free from superstitious fear of the afterlife.
