    2-Mark Short Answer Questions :

    1. State the names of any two Pramāṇas admitted by Mīmāṁsā philosophy. [GU 2025]

Answer: Two distinctive Pramāṇas admitted in Mīmāṁsā epistemology are: 1) Arthāpatti (Postulation/Presumption) and 2) Anupalabdhi (Non-apprehension).

    2. Name two primary source texts of Mīmāṁsā philosophy.

Answer: Two foundational texts are Maharṣi Jaimini’s Mīmāṁsā Sūtra and Śabara Svāmin’s Śabara Bhāṣya (or Kumārila Bhaṭṭa’s Ślokavārttika).

    3. Mention two foundational canonical texts of Vedānta philosophy.

Answer: Two primary texts of Vedānta are Bādarāyaṇa’s Brahmasūtra and Adi Śaṅkarācārya’s Śārīraka Bhāṣya (Brahmasūtra-Bhāṣya).

    4. State the fundamental distinction between Mīmāṁsā and Vedānta philosophy.

Answer: Mīmāṁsā (Pūrva-Mīmāṁsā) is grounded in the Karmakāṇḍa (ritual portion) of the Vedas, focusing on ritual sacrifices (yajñas) and moral duties (dharma). Vedānta (Uttara-Mīmāṁsā) is rooted in the Jñānakāṇḍa (philosophical Upaniṣads), emphasizing metaphysical inquiry into Brahman and spiritual liberation (mokṣa).

    5. What is the fundamental aim and purpose of Mīmāṁsā philosophy?

Answer: To establish the infallible and eternal authority (apauruṣeyatva) of the Vedas, provide systematic rules of hermeneutic textual interpretation for Vedic rituals, and delineate the path of Dharma leading to heaven and eventual liberation.

    6. What is the central aim of Vedānta philosophy?

Answer: To provide a coherent philosophical synthesis of the Upaniṣadic teachings, elucidate the true ontological relation between Brahman, the individual soul (Jīva), and the empirical world (Jagat), and eradicate ignorance (Avidyā) through intuitive Self-realization.

    7. Define 'Arthāpatti' (Postulation) as a valid source of knowledge.

Answer: Arthāpatti is the cognitive postulation of an unperceived fact to reconcile two apparently contradictory, established truths. For example, knowing that "Devadatta is fat" yet "does not eat during the day" leads to the valid presumption that "Devadatta eats at night."

    8. What is 'Anupalabdhi' (Non-apprehension)?

Answer: In Kumārila Bhaṭṭa's epistemology, Anupalabdhi is an independent, non-sensory Pramāṇa employed to apprehend the objective non-existence or absence (abhāva) of an object where it would have been perceived had it been present (e.g., cognizing the absence of a jar on a clean table).

    9. Enumerate the two cosmic powers of 'Māyā' in Advaita Vedānta.

Answer: The two constitutive powers of Māyā are: 1) Āvaraṇa-śakti (The veiling power that conceals the true nature of pure Brahman), and 2) Vikṣepa-śakti (The projecting power that superimposes the pluralistic phenomenal world onto Brahman).

    10. Name the three tiers of reality (Sattātraividhya) formulated by Śaṅkarācārya.

Answer: 1) Prātibhāsika Sattā (Apparent/subjective reality, such as dream objects or illusions), 2) Vyāvahārika Sattā (Empirical/phenomenal reality governing practical life), and 3) Pāramārthika Sattā (Ultimate, absolute reality, which is Brahman alone).

    11. Explain the concept of 'Apṛthaksiddhi' (Inseparable Relation) in Viśiṣṭādvaita.

Answer: Apṛthaksiddhi is the organic, internal, and inseparable relation subsisting between Brahman and the dual modes of Cit (individual souls) and Acit (material cosmos). Rāmānuja models this on the Śarīra-Śarīrī-bhāva (body-soul relationship), where the cosmos forms the body of Brahman.

    12. Enumerate the fourfold spiritual prerequisites (Sādhana Catuṣṭaya) in Vedānta.

Answer: The four prerequisites for Vedāntic inquiry are: 1) Nityānitya-vastu-viveka (Discrimination between eternal and non-eternal), 2) Ihāmutrārthaphala-bhoga-virāga (Renunciation of fruits of action here and hereafter), 3) Śamadamādi-ṣaṭka-sampatti (Sixfold virtues: tranquility, self-restraint, etc.), and 4) Mumukṣutva (Intense longing for liberation).

    13. What is 'Svataḥ-prāmāṇyavāda' in Mīmāṁsā epistemology?

Answer: Svataḥ-prāmāṇyavāda asserts that all knowledge is intrinsically valid at the moment of its generation, verified by its own internal causal conditions without requiring external verification. Only the invalidity of knowledge is proven extrinsically (parataḥ-aprāmāṇya) when defects are discovered.

    14. What is meant by Śaṅkarācārya’s doctrine of 'Vivartavāda'?

Answer: Vivartavāda is the theory of apparent, illusory causation where the underlying cause (Kāraṇa) appears as an effect (Kārya) without undergoing real transformation. Analogous to a rope appearing as a snake, Brahman appears as the empirical universe without modifying His pure, immutable essence.

    15. Define 'Prapatti' (Śaraṇāgati) in Viśiṣṭādvaita Vedānta.

Answer: Prapatti is total devotional resignation and unconditional surrender of one's ego and spiritual destiny to Lord Nārāyaṇa. In Rāmānuja's system, it is an accessible, direct path to liberation open to all aspirants regardless of caste or social status.

     5-Mark Analytical Questions :

    1. Explain the theory of knowledge in the context of Mīmāṁsā philosophy. [GU 2025]

Answer: Mīmāṁsā epistemology is constructed to defend the absolute authority (apauruṣeyatva) of the Vedas and establish the intrinsic validity of knowledge through the doctrine of Svataḥ-prāmāṇyavāda. According to Mīmāṁsā, valid cognition arises spontaneously when normal cognitive mechanisms operate; truth is inherent in knowledge and does not depend on external validation. Extrinsic verification (parataḥ-aprāmāṇya) is invoked only when practical contradictions or defects in cognitive instruments are detected.

To account for valid knowledge (pramā), the two major subschools of Mīmāṁsā formulate comprehensive epistemological frameworks:

    • The Bhāṭṭa School (Kumārila Bhaṭṭa): Accepts six independent Pramāṇas—Pratyakṣa (Perception), Anumāna (Inference), Upamāna (Comparison), Śabda (Verbal Testimony), Arthāpatti (Postulation), and Anupalabdhi (Non-apprehension).

    • The Prābhākara School (Prabhākara Miśra): Rejects Anupalabdhi (subsuming negative cognition under perception) and admits the first five Pramāṇas.

In Mīmāṁsā, Śabda-pramāṇa occupies the supreme epistemological position because eternal, uncreated Vedic statements represent the sole infallible source for apprehending trans-empirical duties (Dharma).

Regarding the problem of cognitive error (Khyātivāda), the two schools offer distinct theories: Prabhākara advocates Akhyātivāda (the non-apprehension of the distinction between perception and memory), while Kumārila advocates Viparītakhyātivāda (the positive misapprehension of an object presented under a different form).

    2. Give an overall analysis of the basic doctrines of Vedānta philosophy. [GU 2025]

Answer: Vedānta philosophy represents the culmination of the philosophical reflections of the Upaniṣads, systematic aphorisms of the Brahmasūtra, and ethical-theological teachings of the Bhagavadgītā (collectively known as the Prasthānatrayī). The core inquiry of Vedānta centers on the tripartite ontological realities: Brahman (Ultimate Reality), Jīva (The Individual Self), and Jagat (The Phenomenal World).

The primary traditions of Vedānta analyze these realities as follows:

    • Advaita Vedānta (Absolute Non-Dualism of Śaṅkara): Brahman alone is real, absolute, unconditioned, and attribute-less consciousness (Nirguṇa-Brahman). The pluralistic world (Jagat) is an apparent, non-transformational projection (Vivarta) caused by the cosmic illusion of Māyā. The individual soul (Jīva) is essentially non-different from Brahman; spiritual ignorance (Avidyā) generates the illusion of multiplicity, which is dissolved through intuitive metaphysical knowledge (Jñāna).

    • Viśiṣṭādvaita Vedānta (Qualified Non-Dualism of Rāmānuja): Rejects attribute-less monism and defines Brahman as the supreme personal deity (Saguṇa Brahman or Nārāyaṇa), possessing infinite auspicious attributes. Souls (Cit) and the material cosmos (Acit) are real, eternal modes (prakāra) forming the cosmic body of God through the relation of inseparable inherence (Apṛthaksiddhi). Liberation is attained through loving devotion (Bhakti) and total surrender (Prapatti).

Vedānta systematically synthesizes Vedic ontology, epistemology, and soteriology, directing human intellect toward transcendence and spiritual liberation.

    3. Write a short note on the concept of Māyā. [GU 2025]

Answer: In Advaita Vedānta, the doctrine of Māyā is the metaphysical principle utilized by Śaṅkarācārya to explain the emergence of the pluralistic empirical universe from the singular, non-dual substratum of pure Brahman without compromising Brahman’s immutable nature. Māyā is defined as ontologically ineffable: "Sadasadbhyām anirvacanīyā"—it cannot be classified as real (Sat), because it is sublated upon the dawn of Brahman-knowledge; nor can it be classified as unreal (Asat), because it produces the tangible, perceived phenomenal world.

Māyā operates through two distinct cosmic powers (śaktis):

    1. Āvaraṇa-śakti (The Veiling Power): This power obscures the non-dual, homogeneous essence of Brahman from human consciousness, similar to how darkness conceals the true identity of a rope.

    2. Vikṣepa-śakti (The Projecting Power): This power projects the empirical universe of space, time, name, and form upon the veiled Brahman, causing an observer to mistake the rope for a snake.

Māyā is beginningless (anādi) but finite (śānta), as it is completely dissolved by intuitive knowledge of the Self (Brahmajñāna). While empirically real (Vyāvahārika Sattā), Māyā is ultimately an illusory appearance from the standpoint of absolute reality (Pāramārthika Sattā).

    4. Distinguish between the 'Vivartavāda' of Advaita Vedānta and the 'Pariṇāmavāda' of Viśiṣṭādvaita.

Answer: The debate between Śaṅkara’s Vivartavāda and Rāmānuja’s Brahma-Pariṇāmavāda represents a fundamental divide in Indian causal and cosmological theories:

    • Vivartavāda (Theory of Apparent Modification): Advanced by Śaṅkarācārya, this doctrine asserts that the effect is an illusory, phenomenal appearance superimposed on the cause without causing any real ontological change in the cause. Brahman is absolute, immutable, and partless; He cannot undergo actual transformation. The universe is a Vivarta (apparent projection) of Brahman through Māyā, just as a rope appears as a snake without undergoing physical alteration.

    • Brahma-Pariṇāmavāda (Theory of Real Transformation): Advanced by Rāmānuja, this doctrine asserts that the effect is a genuine, substantive modification (pariṇāma) of the material cause. Rāmānuja argues that Brahman is the material cause (upādāna-kāraṇa) of the cosmos. In the unmanifest state (pralaya), the conscious souls (Cit) and unconscious matter (Acit) reside in Brahman in a subtle form. During creation, these subtle modes evolve into the gross empirical world (analogous to milk transforming into curd).

Thus, while Advaita regards the world as a phenomenal appearance (mithyā), Viśiṣṭādvaita affirms the ontological reality of the created world as an actual transformation of Brahman’s body.

    5. Discuss the nature and philosophical necessity of 'Arthāpatti' (Postulation) in Mīmāṁsā.

Answer: Arthāpatti (Presumption or Postulation) is recognized as an independent Pramāṇa by both the Bhāṭṭa and Prābhākara schools of Mīmāṁsā, as well as Advaita Vedānta. It is defined by Śabara Svāmin as: "Dṛṣṭaḥ śruto vā artho'nyathā nopapadyate ityarthakalpanā"—the cognitive postulation of an unobserved fact to reconcile two experienced facts that appear mutually contradictory.

The classical formulation is illustrated through Devadatta:

    • Fact 1: Devadatta is growing continuously stout.

    • Fact 2: Devadatta does not eat during the day (verified by direct observation).

These two propositions create a logical contradiction: starvation cannot produce weight gain. To resolve this impasse, we postulate a third, unobserved proposition: "Devadatta eats at night."

While the Nyāya school attempts to reduce Arthāpatti to a negative inference (Kevalavyatirekī Anumāna), Mīmāṁsakas reject this reduction. They argue that Arthāpatti does not proceed from a recognized relation of invariable concomitance (Vyāpti); rather, it is an immediate epistemological necessity driven by the urge to eliminate structural contradiction between perceived facts.

    6. Explain the concept of Vedic Apauruṣeyatva and Dharma in Mīmāṁsā Ethics.

Answer: The ethical and metaphysical structure of Pūrva-Mīmāṁsā is anchored in the absolute authority of the Vedas, grounded in their Apauruṣeyatva (authorless and eternal nature). Mīmāṁsakas assert that the Vedas are not compositions of historical human authors, nor are they products of divine creation; they are eternal, uncreated sound-matrices (Śabda-nityatā) revealing timeless moral truths.

Maharṣi Jaimini defines Dharma in the Mīmāṁsā Sūtra as: "Codanā-lakṣaṇo'rtho Dharmaḥ". Codanā signifies Vedic injunctions and commands (vidhis). Dharma is not derived through sensory observation or subjective human consensus, but consists of actions enjoined by the eternal imperatives of scripture.

Mīmāṁsā ethics is deontological: Vedic duties must be performed purely because they are authoritative scriptural commands. The ritual performance of these enjoined duties generates a metaphysical, unseen potency termed Apūrva. This Apūrva acts as an autonomous causal bridge, ensuring that ritual sacrifices yield their moral and transcendent fruits—such as the attainment of heaven (Svarga)—in accordance with cosmic justice.

    7. Differentiate between Nirguṇa Brahman and Saguṇa Brahman (Īśvara) in Advaita Vedānta.

Answer: In Advaita Vedānta, the ultimate ontological principle is examined from two distinct epistemic viewpoints:

    1. Nirguṇa Brahman (The Absolute/Para Brahman): Considered from the standpoint of ultimate truth (Pāramārthika Dṛṣṭi), Brahman is entirely attribute-less, non-relational, indeterminate, and pure consciousness (Sat-Cit-Ānanda). Nirguṇa Brahman is beyond all linguistic predications, conceptual categories, and anthropomorphic attributes. It is not an agent, creator, or ruler of the world, as it is untouched by cosmic illusion (Māyā).

    2. Saguṇa Brahman or Īśvara (The Personal God/Apara Brahman): Considered from the empirical standpoint (Vyāvahārika Dṛṣṭi), when the indeterminate Brahman is viewed in relation to the cosmic limiting adjunct (Upādhi) of Māyā, He is apprehended as Saguṇa Brahman or Īśvara. Īśvara is the omnipotent, omniscient, and omnipresent creator, preserver, and dissolver of the universe, endowed with auspicious attributes.

While Saguṇa Brahman is the legitimate object of devotion, moral prayer, and theological worship in practical life, the ultimate metaphysical goal of Vedānta is the direct realization of identity with the non-dual Nirguṇa Brahman.

    8. Explain the doctrine of 'Tattvatraya' (Īśvara, Cit, and Acit) in Viśiṣṭādvaita Vedānta.

Answer: The metaphysical ontology of Ācārya Rāmānuja’s Viśiṣṭādvaita is structured around the integrated relationship of three ultimate realities, known as the Tattvatraya:

    1. Īśvara (The Supreme Lord): The independent, personal Godhead (identified as Nārāyaṇa or Parabrahman). He is endowed with infinite auspicious attributes and is both the material (upādāna) and efficient (nimitta) cause of the universe.

    2. Cit (The Conscious Selves): The infinite multiplicity of conscious individual souls (Jīvas). Each soul is an eternal, immutable, knowing subject (jñātā), actor (kartā), and experiencer (bhoktā), structurally dependent on Īśvara.

    3. Acit (The Insentient Matter): The unconscious material substance that undergoes physical evolution, categorized into Prakṛti (matter), Kāla (time), and Śuddha-sattva (pure spiritual matter). It forms the objective environment for the experience and spiritual development of souls.

Rāmānuja reconciles these three principles through his doctrine of Viśiṣṭādvaita (Qualified Non-Dualism). Īśvara is the qualified substantive (Viśeṣya), while Cit and Acit are His real, inseparable attributes or modes (Viśeṣaṇas or Prakāras), forming an organic whole via the body-soul relationship (Śarīra-Śarīrī-sambandha).

    9. Explain the nature and significance of 'Anupalabdhi' (Non-apprehension) in Mīmāṁsā Epistemology.

Answer: In the Bhāṭṭa school of Mīmāṁsā, Anupalabdhi (Non-apprehension) is formulated as an independent Pramāṇa dedicated exclusively to the cognition of non-existence or absence (Abhāva).

Kumārila Bhaṭṭa argues that the non-existence of an entity cannot be perceived by the sensory organs because senses require positive physical contact (sannikarṣa) with an object, whereas absence is an immaterial negation devoid of sensory attributes. When an object is not perceived under conditions where it ought to have been perceived (Yogyānupalabdhi), that very non-perception acts as an independent means of knowledge. For instance, in broad daylight, looking at an empty desk and not perceiving a book yields the immediate valid cognition: "The book is not on the desk."

While the Naiyāyikas claim that absence is perceived through a modified contact (Viśeṣaṇatā-sannikarṣa), the Bhāṭṭa Mīmāṁsakas demonstrate that the senses grasp only the positive locus (the desk); the knowledge of absence is generated solely through the cognitive operation of Anupalabdhi.

    10. Discuss the nature of Liberation (Mokṣa) and the spiritual path in Advaita Vedānta.

Answer: In Advaita Vedānta, bondage (Saṁsāra) is not an objective ontological reality, but a subjective misapprehension generated by primordial ignorance (Avidyā), wherein the Self mistakenly identifies with the physical body, mind, and senses. Consequently, Mokṣa (Liberation) is not the production of a new state or the attainment of a distant realm, but the direct realization of one’s eternal, non-dual identity as pure Brahman ("Brahmavid brahmaiva bhavati"—the knower of Brahman becomes Brahman).

Śaṅkarācārya asserts that ritual action (Karma) and meditation (Upāsanā) are merely preparatory disciplines for purifying the mind; direct liberation is achieved solely through Jñāna (Metaphysical Knowledge).

The spiritual path proceeds systematically through three stages:

    1. Śravaṇa: Attentive listening to the foundational Upaniṣadic declarations (Mahāvākyas, e.g., Tat Tvam Asi) from an enlightened teacher.

    2. Manana: Rigorous intellectual reflection and dialectical reasoning to dispel all doubts regarding the non-dual truth.

    3. Nididhyāsana: Sustained, unbroken contemplative meditation on the nature of the Self to eradicate deep-seated habitual impressions of duality.

Advaita affirms the possibility of Jīvanmukti (liberation while living in the physical body), followed by Videhamukti (unembodied final liberation upon the dissolution of the physical frame).
