    PART B — 15 Short-Answer Questions

    1. Explain the First Noble Truth.

Answer: The First Noble Truth is the truth of Dukkha. Buddha teaches that ordinary worldly existence is marked by suffering, dissatisfaction and insecurity. Birth, old age, disease, death, separation from loved ones and association with unpleasant things are forms of Dukkha. Thus, worldly life cannot provide permanent satisfaction.

    2. What is the Second Noble Truth?

Answer: The Second Noble Truth explains the cause of Dukkha. According to Buddha, the main cause is Tanha, or craving. Human beings desire pleasure, existence, possessions and various experiences. When these desires are not fulfilled, suffering arises. Therefore, craving is regarded as the origin of Dukkha.

    3. Explain the Third Noble Truth. (2024 PYQ)

Answer: The Third Noble Truth is the cessation of Dukkha. Buddha teaches that suffering can end when its cause, especially craving, is removed. The complete destruction of craving and ignorance leads to Nirvana. Thus, Nirvana represents freedom from the cycle of suffering and worldly attachment.

    4. What is the Fourth Noble Truth?

Answer: The Fourth Noble Truth explains the path leading to the cessation of Dukkha. This path is the Noble Eightfold Path. It consists of Right View, Right Intention, Right Speech, Right Action, Right Livelihood, Right Effort, Right Mindfulness and Right Concentration.

    5. What is Pratityasamutpada?

Answer: Pratityasamutpada means dependent origination. It states that things do not arise independently or without causes. Every conditioned phenomenon arises because of certain conditions. When those conditions disappear, the phenomenon also ceases. This doctrine explains the causal nature of existence and the arising of suffering.

    6. Explain Anityavada. (2023 PYQ)

Answer: Anityavada is Buddha's doctrine of impermanence. According to this doctrine, all conditioned things are constantly changing. Nothing in worldly existence remains permanently identical. Human body, feelings, thoughts and external objects undergo continuous change. Understanding impermanence helps a person overcome attachment and move towards liberation.

    7. What is Anatmavada?

Answer: Anatmavada means the doctrine of no permanent self. Buddhism rejects the idea of an eternal, unchanging Atman. What we call a person is actually a changing combination of five aggregates or Skandhas. Therefore, there is no permanent independent self behind these changing elements.

    8. What is the Buddhist concept of Nirvana? (2024 PYQ)

Answer: Nirvana is the state of liberation from Dukkha. It is achieved through the removal of craving, ignorance and attachment. When the causes of suffering are completely destroyed, the cycle of suffering comes to an end. Nirvana therefore represents the highest goal of Buddhist spiritual life.

    9. How are Anityavada and Dukkha related?

Answer: Anityavada and Dukkha are closely related. Since all conditioned things are impermanent, attachment to them cannot provide lasting satisfaction. People suffer when they expect changing things to remain permanent. Thus, the recognition of impermanence helps us understand why worldly attachment produces Dukkha.

    10. Explain the relationship between Pratityasamutpada and Dukkha.

Answer: Pratityasamutpada explains how Dukkha arises through a chain of conditions. Ignorance gives rise to further conditions, ultimately producing suffering. If the causal chain is broken by removing ignorance and craving, suffering can cease. Thus, dependent origination explains both the origin and possible cessation of Dukkha.

    11. What are the five Skandhas?

Answer: Buddhism analyses the individual into five changing aggregates called Skandhas: Rupa (body/form), Vedana (feeling), Samjna (perception), Samskara (mental formations) and Vijnana (consciousness). Since these are constantly changing, none can be regarded as a permanent self.

    12. Why does Buddhism reject a permanent self?

Answer: Buddhism rejects a permanent self because everything experienced by a person is subject to change. Body, feelings, perceptions, mental formations and consciousness arise and pass away. Since no permanent element can be found among them, Buddhism concludes that there is no eternal and unchanging Atman.

    13. How does craving cause suffering?

Answer: Craving makes people strongly attached to pleasure, possessions, relationships and continued existence. Since worldly objects are impermanent, they cannot permanently satisfy these desires. When desired things change or disappear, dissatisfaction arises. Therefore, Tanha becomes a major cause of Dukkha.

    14. How does the doctrine of impermanence help in liberation?

Answer: The understanding of impermanence reduces attachment to worldly things. When a person realises that body, possessions, pleasures and experiences are constantly changing, excessive attachment gradually decreases. This helps remove craving, which is a cause of suffering. Therefore, knowledge of Anityavada supports the path towards liberation.

    15. Mention the Buddhist analysis of the individual. (2023 PYQ)

Answer: Buddhism analyses the individual in terms of the Skandhas, or aggregates. These are Rupa, Vedana, Samjna, Samskara and Vijnana. The individual is not a permanent substance but a changing combination of these factors. This analysis supports the Buddhist doctrine of Anatmavada.

    PART C — 10 Long-Answer Questions :

    1. What are the Four Noble Truths? Explain them. (2024 PYQ)

Answer: The Four Noble Truths form the foundation of Buddha's teaching. They explain the nature of suffering, its cause, its cessation and the way to overcome it.

    1. Dukkha — Truth of Suffering: The first truth states that worldly existence is characterised by Dukkha. Birth, old age, disease and death are forms of suffering. Separation from what we love and association with what we dislike also cause suffering.

    2. Samudaya — Origin of Dukkha: The second truth explains the cause of suffering. Buddha identifies Tanha, or craving, as its principal cause. Human beings continuously desire pleasure, possessions, existence and other experiences.

    3. Nirodha — Cessation of Dukkha: The third truth teaches that Dukkha can be brought to an end. When craving and ignorance are destroyed, suffering ceases. This state of freedom is called Nirvana.

    4. Magga — Path to the Cessation of Dukkha: The fourth truth gives the practical way to overcome suffering. It is the Noble Eightfold Path: Right View, Right Intention, Right Speech, Right Action, Right Livelihood, Right Effort, Right Mindfulness and Right Concentration.

Thus, the Four Noble Truths provide both a diagnosis of suffering and a practical method for overcoming it.

    2. State and explain Buddha's view of impermanence. (2023 PYQ)

Answer: Buddha's doctrine of impermanence is known as Anityavada or Anicca. It is one of the important principles of Buddhist philosophy. According to this doctrine, all conditioned things are subject to continuous change. Nothing in ordinary worldly existence remains permanently in the same condition.

The human body changes from childhood to old age. Feelings arise and disappear, thoughts change, relationships change and material objects are also subject to decay. Therefore, nothing that depends upon conditions can remain permanent.

Buddha's doctrine of impermanence is closely connected with Dukkha. People experience suffering because they become attached to things that are constantly changing. A person may expect pleasure, relationships, wealth or physical existence to remain stable, but such stability is impossible in the changing world.

Anityavada is also connected with Anatmavada. If the body, feelings, perceptions, mental formations and consciousness are all changing, none of them can be identified as an eternal self.

Thus, understanding impermanence helps a person reduce attachment and craving. When craving decreases, Dukkha also decreases. In this way, the realisation of impermanence becomes an important step towards Nirvana.

    3. What is Pratityasamutpada? Explain the doctrine of dependent origination.

Answer: Pratityasamutpada is one of the central doctrines of Buddhist philosophy. The term means dependent origination or the arising of something in dependence upon conditions. Buddha teaches that things do not arise independently. Every conditioned event depends upon certain causes and conditions.

The doctrine is commonly expressed through the twelve links of dependent origination. They explain the causal process through which ignorance leads ultimately to suffering. The chain begins with Avidya (ignorance) and includes Samskara, Vijnana, Nama-rupa, Sadayatana, Sparsa, Vedana, Trishna, Upadana, Bhava, Jati and finally Jara-marana.

The doctrine has both an explanatory and practical significance. It explains why human beings remain trapped in suffering. Ignorance gives rise to craving and attachment, and these conditions sustain the cycle of suffering.

The important point is that the causal chain can also be broken. If ignorance is removed through wisdom, craving and attachment can disappear. Consequently, suffering can cease.

Pratityasamutpada therefore provides a causal explanation of Dukkha and also shows the possibility of its cessation. It avoids the idea that things arise either without causes or from an absolutely permanent substance. It is consequently an important foundation of Buddhist thought.

    4. Explain the Buddhist doctrine of Anatmavada.

Answer: Anatmavada is the Buddhist doctrine of no permanent self. Buddhism rejects the idea that there is an eternal, unchanging and independent Atman within a person. According to Buddha, what we call an individual is a changing combination of different physical and mental factors.

Buddhism analyses the individual through the five Skandhas: Rupa or physical form, Vedana or feeling, Samjna or perception, Samskara or mental formations, and Vijnana or consciousness. None of these remains permanently unchanged.

The body changes continuously. Feelings come and go. Perceptions change according to circumstances. Mental formations are also constantly changing, and consciousness arises in dependence upon conditions. Therefore, none of these can be identified as a permanent self.

Anatmavada is closely connected with Anityavada. Since all components of the individual are impermanent, no eternal self can be discovered among them. It is also related to Dukkha, because attachment to the idea of a permanent self encourages desire and suffering.

The doctrine does not simply deny personal existence in an ordinary practical sense. Rather, it denies the existence of a permanent and unchanging essence behind the changing processes of life. Understanding this helps overcome attachment and supports the attainment of Nirvana.

    5. Explain the Third Noble Truth of Buddhism. (2024 PYQ)

Answer: The Third Noble Truth is called Nirodha, meaning the cessation of Dukkha. It is one of the Four Noble Truths taught by Buddha. After identifying suffering and its cause, Buddha explains that suffering can actually be brought to an end.

According to the Second Noble Truth, Tanha, or craving, is the principal cause of Dukkha. Human beings continuously desire pleasant experiences, possessions, existence and other objects. Because worldly things are impermanent, attachment to them produces dissatisfaction and suffering.

The cessation of Dukkha therefore requires the cessation of craving. When craving, attachment and ignorance are removed, the causes that maintain suffering disappear. This state of freedom from suffering is called Nirvana.

Nirvana is not merely temporary happiness or an ordinary pleasurable condition. It represents liberation from the causes of suffering and from attachment to worldly existence. It is achieved through wisdom, ethical conduct and mental discipline.

The Third Noble Truth is important because it gives hope and a practical goal. Buddhism does not merely describe the problem of suffering; it teaches that suffering can be overcome.

Thus, the Third Noble Truth establishes the possibility of liberation. It prepares the ground for the Fourth Noble Truth, which explains the Noble Eightfold Path leading to the cessation of Dukkha.

    6. Discuss the relation between Anityavada and Anatmavada.

Answer: Anityavada and Anatmavada are closely connected doctrines of Buddhist philosophy. Anityavada means impermanence, while Anatmavada means no permanent self.

According to Anityavada, all conditioned things are continuously changing. The human body changes with time, feelings arise and disappear, perceptions change, mental activities change and consciousness also occurs under changing conditions.

Buddhism then asks whether any permanent self can be found among these changing elements. The answer is negative. This leads to Anatmavada. The five Skandhas—Rupa, Vedana, Samjna, Samskara and Vijnana—are all impermanent. Therefore, none of them can be regarded as an eternal Atman.

These doctrines are also connected with Dukkha. Human beings suffer because they become attached to impermanent things and expect them to remain permanent. They may also identify themselves with changing physical and mental conditions. Such attachment produces dissatisfaction.

The understanding of impermanence and non-self helps weaken attachment and craving. When craving is removed, the cause of Dukkha is removed. Therefore, these doctrines have an important soteriological purpose: they help the individual move towards liberation and Nirvana.

Thus, Anityavada provides the basis for understanding the changing nature of existence, while Anatmavada applies this insight to the idea of the self.

    7. Explain the Buddhist conception of Dukkha and its cause.

Answer: Dukkha is one of the central concepts of Buddhist philosophy. It is generally translated as suffering, but it also includes dissatisfaction, insecurity and the inability of worldly existence to provide permanent satisfaction.

According to the First Noble Truth, Dukkha is present in ordinary worldly life. Birth, old age, disease and death are painful experiences. Separation from loved ones and association with unpleasant things also produce suffering. Even pleasant experiences can become sources of Dukkha because they are temporary.

The Second Noble Truth explains the cause of Dukkha. Buddha identifies Tanha, or craving, as the principal cause. Human beings desire pleasure, possessions, continued existence and various experiences. They become attached to these things and expect them to provide lasting satisfaction.

However, according to Anityavada, worldly things are impermanent. Therefore, when desired objects change, disappear or fail to satisfy expectations, suffering arises.

Craving is supported by ignorance, because people fail to understand the true nature of existence. They regard impermanent things as permanent and changing processes as belonging to a permanent self.

Thus, Dukkha arises from craving, attachment and ignorance. Buddhism teaches that when these causes are removed, suffering can cease. This leads to the Third Noble Truth, Nirodha, and ultimately towards Nirvana.

    8. Explain the relationship between Pratityasamutpada and the Four Noble Truths.

Answer: Pratityasamutpada, or dependent origination, and the Four Noble Truths are closely related in Buddhist philosophy. Both explain the nature, cause and cessation of suffering.

The First Noble Truth states that Dukkha exists. Pratityasamutpada explains how suffering arises through a chain of dependent conditions. The process begins with ignorance (Avidya) and eventually leads to birth, ageing, death and suffering.

The Second Noble Truth identifies Tanha or craving as the cause of Dukkha. In dependent origination, craving appears as an important link in the causal chain. Craving leads to attachment, which continues the process producing suffering.

The Third Noble Truth teaches the cessation of Dukkha. Pratityasamutpada also implies that when the necessary conditions disappear, their effects disappear. Therefore, if ignorance and craving are removed, the causal process leading to suffering can be stopped.

The Fourth Noble Truth gives the practical means for achieving this cessation through the Noble Eightfold Path. Right understanding, ethical conduct and mental discipline help remove ignorance, craving and attachment.

Thus, the Four Noble Truths provide a broad explanation of suffering and its solution, while Pratityasamutpada gives a deeper causal explanation of how suffering arises and how its conditions can be removed.

    9. Discuss the Buddhist analysis of the individual in relation to Anatmavada. (2023 PYQ)

Answer: Buddhism does not regard the individual as an eternal and unchanging substance. Instead, it analyses the individual as a combination of changing physical and mental factors. This analysis forms an important basis of Anatmavada, or the doctrine of no permanent self.

The individual is traditionally analysed through the five Skandhas. They are Rupa (physical form), Vedana (feeling), Samjna (perception), Samskara (mental formations) and Vijnana (consciousness).

Rupa refers to the physical aspect of the individual. Vedana includes feelings or sensations. Samjna refers to perception and recognition. Samskara includes various mental dispositions and activities. Vijnana refers to consciousness.

All these aggregates are impermanent. They arise and change according to conditions. Since none of them remains permanently identical, none can be identified as an eternal self.

This analysis is closely connected with Anityavada. If all components of personality are changing, then there is no permanent entity behind them. The belief in a permanent self encourages attachment and produces suffering.

Buddhist analysis therefore aims not merely at theoretical description but at liberation. By understanding the individual as a changing process rather than a permanent substance, attachment to the self can be reduced. This contributes to the destruction of craving and ultimately supports the attainment of Nirvana.

    10. Explain the Four Noble Truths with special reference to Nirvana.

Answer: The Four Noble Truths provide the basic framework of Buddha's teaching and explain the problem of suffering and its solution.

The First Noble Truth, Dukkha, states that worldly existence is characterised by suffering and dissatisfaction. Birth, old age, disease, death, separation and attachment to impermanent things produce Dukkha.

The Second Noble Truth, Samudaya, explains the origin of suffering. The principal cause is Tanha, or craving. Human beings desire pleasure, possessions and continued existence and become attached to them.

The Third Noble Truth, Nirodha, teaches that suffering can cease. When craving and ignorance are completely removed, Dukkha comes to an end. This state of liberation is called Nirvana.

The Fourth Noble Truth, Magga, explains the means of achieving this state. Buddha prescribes the Noble Eightfold Path, consisting of Right View, Right Intention, Right Speech, Right Action, Right Livelihood, Right Effort, Right Mindfulness and Right Concentration.

Thus, Nirvana is not an isolated concept. It is the logical goal of the Four Noble Truths. The first truth identifies the problem, the second identifies its cause, the third establishes that the problem can be ended, and the fourth provides the method.

Therefore, the Four Noble Truths form a complete practical philosophy directed towards freedom from Dukkha and the attainment of Nirvana.
