    12. Define 'Jīva' and 'Ajīva' according to Jaina philosophy.

Answer: Jīva designates the conscious, non-material soul endowed with perception, knowledge, and life-force. Ajīva denotes insentient, non-conscious reality, categorized into five ontological substances: Pudgala (matter), Dharma (principle of motion), Adharma (principle of rest), Ākāśa (space), and Kāla (time).

    13. What is meant by 'Pratītyasamutpāda'?

Answer: Pratītyasamutpāda (Dependent Origination) is the central Buddhist doctrine of universal causality stating: "This arising, that arises" (asmin sati idaṁ bhavati). It asserts that all phenomenal events and entities are impermanent, inter-dependent, and conditioned by antecedent causes without any static substratum.

    14. What is the doctrine of 'Anekāntavāda' in Jainism?

Answer: Anekāntavāda (the doctrine of manifold reality) is Jaina metaphysical pluralism asserting that reality is infinitely complex (ananta-dharmātmakam vastu). Finite human intellects grasp only partial facets from specific perspectives, whereas only omniscient beings (Kevalins) comprehend all aspects simultaneously.

     5-Mark Analytical Questions :

    1. Explain the doctrine of Kṣaṇikavāda (Universal Flux). [GU 2024]

Answer: Kṣaṇikavāda, or the theory of momentariness, is an ontological extension of the Buddha’s original doctrine of universal impermanence (aniccavāda). Developed systematically by Buddhist logicians such as Dharmakīrti and Ratnakīrti, this doctrine asserts that whatever exists is momentary. The core criterion of reality in Buddhism is defined as causal efficiency: arthakriyākāritva-lakṣaṇaṁ sat—an entity is real if and only if it possesses the capacity to produce an effect.

Buddhists argue that an unchanging, permanent entity cannot exercise causal efficacy. If an object were permanent, it would either produce all its past, present, and future effects simultaneously or fail to produce them at all. Because a cause changes every moment to generate a succeeding effect, reality consists of a dynamic, uninterrupted series of discrete momentary points (kṣaṇas).

The empirical appearance of endurance is merely an illusion produced by the rapid continuity of successive, similar events—analogous to the continuous flame of a burning lamp or the uninterrupted current of a river. Consequently, the mind, soul, and external objects are devoid of an enduring essence, existing purely as causal streams of transient events.

    2. Discuss Jaina Atheism. [GU 2024]

Answer: Jainism is classified as a heterodox (nāstika) system because it rejects the absolute authority of the Vedas and systematically denies the existence of an omnipotent, supreme personal creator God (Īśvara). According to Jaina cosmology, the universe is uncreated, self-sustaining, and eternal (anādi-ananta). It functions through immutable natural laws governing the interaction of eternal substances (Jīva and Ajīva).

Jaina thinkers leveled rigorous dialectical arguments against theistic proofs:

    • The Problem of Creation: If God is pure, eternal, and self-sufficient, He would have no desire or motive to create a universe. Desire implies lack, which contradicts divine perfection.

    • The Problem of Evil: An all-merciful and omnipotent God cannot be reconciled with a universe permeated by suffering, injustice, and pain.

    • Sufficiency of Karma: The autonomous mechanism of Karma is self-regulatory. Moral actions automatically generate their respective fruits (phala) without requiring a divine administrator.

Jainism is not irreligious; it replaces a transcendent creator with an elevated human ideal. The Tīrthaṅkaras—enlightened souls who conquered all passions and attained Kevala Jñāna (infinite knowledge, bliss, and power)—are revered as the highest spiritual ideals and worshipped as true divinity.

    3. Explain the Sāṁkhya theory of Causation (Satkāryavāda). [GU 2024]

Answer: Sāṁkhya metaphysics is grounded in Satkāryavāda, the doctrine that an effect pre-exists implicitly within its material cause prior to its empirical manifestation. The production of an effect is not the de novo creation of a non-existent entity, but the transformation (pariṇāma) of latent cause into manifest form.

In the Sāṁkhyakārikā, Īśvarakṛṣṇa provides five classical proofs for Satkāryavāda:

    1. Asadakaraṇāt: What is non-existent can never be brought into existence (e.g., oil cannot be extracted from sand because it does not exist there).

    2. Upādānagrahaṇāt: An appropriate material cause must be selected to produce a specific effect (e.g., milk is chosen to produce curd).

    3. Sarvasambhavābhāvāt: All things cannot be produced from all things; there is an invariant, specific relation between cause and effect.

    4. Śaktasya Śakyakaraṇāt: A potent cause produces only that effect for which it possesses the inherent causal capacity.

    5. Kāraṇabhāvācca: The effect is non-different in essence from its material cause (e.g., a cloth is identical in substance to the threads).

This position is specifically designated as Prakṛti-pariṇāmavāda, establishing that the entire phenomenal universe is a real evolution (pariṇāma) of the unmanifest root matter, Mūla-Prakṛti.

    4. Discuss the concept of God in Yoga Philosophy. [GU 2024]

Answer: Patañjali’s Yoga system supplements the twenty-five non-theistic ontological principles of Sāṁkhya by incorporating Īśvara (God) as the twenty-sixth principle, earning it the designation Seśvara-Sāṁkhya (Theistic Sāṁkhya). In the Yogasūtra, God is defined as a distinct, exceptional conscious self: "Kleśa-karma-vipākāśayair aparāmṛṣṭaḥ puruṣa-viśeṣa Īśvaraḥ". God is a unique Puruṣa who is eternally untouched by afflictions (kleśas), actions (karmas), fruitions (vipāka), and latent impressions (āśaya).

Key dimensions of the Yogic conception of God include:

    • Archetype and Teacher: God is the omniscient, primordial Guru of all ancient teachers (pūrveṣām api guruḥ), unconditioned by the limitations of time.

    • Non-Creator Status: Īśvara does not create, maintain, or destroy the cosmos; cosmic evolution remains driven by the dynamic interaction of Puruṣa and Prakṛti.

    • Practical Soteriological Aid: The inclusion of God in Yoga is primarily pragmatic and soteriological. Devotion and total surrender to God (Īśvara-praṇidhāna) serve as one of the most direct methods for quietening mental modifications (citta-vṛtti-nirodha) and attaining deep meditative absorption (Samādhi). The sacred syllable Praṇava (Oṁ) represents His verbal designation.

    5. Critically examine the Nyāya Concept of God and the proofs for His existence. [GU 2024]

Answer: In the Nyāya system, God (Īśvara) is conceived as the efficient cause (nimitta-kāraṇa) of the universe, while eternal atoms (paramāṇus) constitute its material cause (upādāna-kāraṇa). God possesses infinite consciousness, will, and knowledge. Because unconscious material atoms cannot organize themselves into an orderly cosmos, an omniscient intelligence is required to direct them in accordance with the accumulated moral merit and demerit (Adṛṣṭa) of individual souls.

Udayanācārya, in his Nyāyakusumāñjali, advanced systematic proofs for the existence of God:

    • Causal Argument (Kāryāt): The empirical universe is composite, structured, and an effect. Just as an artifact like a pot requires a conscious potter, the complex universe requires an omniscient creator.

    • Argument from Motion/Arrangement (Āyojanāt): Inanimate atoms are intrinsically static; their initial combination during cosmic creation requires the purposeful intervention of a conscious agent.

    • Administration of Adṛṣṭa (Dhṛtyādeḥ / Adhṛteḥ): The unconscious moral law of karma (Adṛṣṭa) cannot dispense moral desert autonomously; it requires an omniscient moral governor (Karmaphaladātā) to apportion rewards and retributions accurately.

    6. Explain the Atomism of the Vaiśeṣika Philosophy. [GU 2024]

Answer: Vaiśeṣika atomism (Paramāṇuvāda), formulated by Maharṣi Kaṇāda, is a mechanistic and pluralistic cosmology designed to explain the material constitution of the physical world. The four material substances—Earth (Kṣiti), Water (Ap), Fire (Tejas), and Air (Marut)—are reducible to their ultimate, indivisible, indestructible, and unextended constituents called Paramāṇus (atoms). Akāśa (Ether) remains non-atomic, continuous, and all-pervading.

The process of cosmic composition proceeds systematically:

    • Single atoms are imperceptible, indivisible, and possess qualitative specificity.

    • Under the initial impulse generated by Adṛṣṭa through divine will, two single atoms combine to form a Dyad (Dvyaṇuka). A dyad is minute and imperceptible.

    • Three dyads combine to form a Triad (Tryaṇuka or Trasareṇu), which possesses perceptible magnitude, visible like a dust particle floating in a sunbeam.

    • Aggregations of triads generate the gross physical objects of the empirical world.

Vaiśeṣika subscribes to Asatkāryavāda (or Ārambhavāda), holding that composite wholes are novel entities fundamentally non-existent in their atomic components prior to combination.

    7. Discuss the Ethical framework of Mīmāṁsā Philosophy. [GU 2024]

Answer: The ethics of Pūrva-Mīmāṁsā are fundamentally deontological and scriptural, revolving around the concept of Dharma. As defined by Jaimini: "Codanā-lakṣaṇo'rtho Dharmaḥ"—Dharma is an objective duty or good enjoined by Vedic imperatives (vidhi). Moral obligations are absolute and derived directly from the eternal, authorless (apauruṣeya) Vedas rather than human or divine conventions.

Mīmāṁsā categorizes moral actions into specific types:

    1. Nitya Karmas: Mandatory daily obligations (such as Sandhyāvandanā), the performance of which incurs no extra merit, but the omission of which yields demerit (pratyavāya).

    2. Naimittika Karmas: Obligatory duties performed on specific occasions (such as purificatory or expiatory rites).

    3. Kāmya Karmas: Optional rites undertaken to achieve specific desired outcomes (such as sacrifices performed to attain heaven).

    4. Niṣiddha Karmas: Prohibited acts forbidden by Vedic injuctions, leading directly to demerit and suffering.

Early Mīmāṁsā upheld the attainment of heaven (Svarga)—a state of unalloyed bliss—as the summum bonum of human conduct through sacrificial performance, while classical and later exponents synthesized this view with ultimate spiritual liberation (Mokṣa).

    8. Outline the Ontology of Advaita Vedānta. [GU 2024]

Answer: The ontology of Śaṅkarācārya’s Advaita Vedānta is strictly non-dualistic, crystallized in the classical aphorism: "Brahma satyaṁ jagan-mithyā jīvo brahmaiva nāparaḥ" (Brahman alone is real, the empirical world is an illusion, and the individual self is non-different from Brahman).

Advaita ontology operates across three distinct levels of reality (Sattātraividhya):

    1. Pāramārthika Sattā (Ultimate Reality): Undifferentiated, non-relational, attribute-less (Nirguṇa), and pure consciousness (Sat-Cit-Ānanda). Brahman alone belongs to this category.

    2. Vyāvahārika Sattā (Empirical Reality): The phenomenal universe of plurality and individuality. While empirically valid for all practical and scientific purposes, it is ultimately illusory (mithyā), projected onto Brahman through the cosmic mechanism of Māyā (superimposition or adhyāsa).

    3. Prātibhāsika Sattā (Apparent Reality): Purely subjective illusions, such as dream objects or mistaking a rope for a snake.

According to Advaita, the individual soul (Jīva) is identical to Brahman. Apparent multiplicity and bondage are products of ignorance (Avidyā); upon the dawn of foundational knowledge (Jñāna), non-duality is realized.

    9. Provide an Overview of the Abhidharma/Abhidhamma Buddhist Tradition.

Answer: The Abhidharma tradition represents the systematic, analytical, and scholastic development of early Buddhist philosophy. While the Sutta Piṭaka conveys the Buddha’s teachings in conventional pedagogical contexts (vohāra-vacana), the Abhidharma systematizes these insights into rigorous, ultimate philosophical terminology (paramattha-vacana).

The primary objective of Abhidharmic analysis is the deconstruction of empirical phenomena into their ultimate constituent elements, termed Dharmas. The Abhidharma analyzes human psycho-physical reality across four ultimate categories:

    • Citta (Core Consciousness)

    • Cetasika (Associated Mental Factors, such as volition, feeling, concentration)

    • Rūpa (Physical/Material Phenomena)

    • Nibbāna (The Unconditioned Element of Liberation)

By mapping how these transient, interdependent dharmas arise and dissipate without an underlying substratum, the Abhidharma systematically dismantles the illusion of an enduring self (Anattā), laying down an exhaustive taxonomy of mind and matter to facilitate advanced meditative insight.

    10. Explain the Doctrine of Syādvāda in Jaina Philosophy.

Answer: Syādvāda (the doctrine of conditioned predication) is the epistemological and logical expression of Jaina Anekāntavāda (the doctrine of the manifold nature of reality). Because every object possesses infinite characteristics and human perspectives (nayas) are inherently partial, unconditional or absolute categorical assertions are logically invalid.

To prevent dogmatic absolutism, Jainism mandates qualifying all judgments with the particle Syāt (meaning "from a certain perspective" or "conditionally"). This logic is formulated through the sevenfold scheme of predication known as Saptabhaṅgīnaya:

    1. Syād-asti: From a certain perspective, the object exists.

    2. Syān-nāsti: From a certain perspective, the object does not exist.

    3. Syād-asti ca nāsti ca: From a certain perspective, the object both exists and does not exist successively.

    4. Syād-avaktavyaḥ: From a certain perspective, the object is inexpressible.

    5. Syād-asti ca avaktavyaśca: From a certain perspective, the object exists and is inexpressible.

    6. Syān-nāsti ca avaktavyaśca: From a certain perspective, the object does not exist and is inexpressible.

    7. Syād-asti ca nāsti ca avaktavyaśca: From a certain perspective, the object exists, does not exist, and is inexpressible.

Syādvāda establishes intellectual humility, open dialectical inquiry, and non-violence (Ahiṁsā) in philosophical disputation.
