    B. Short Answer Questions — 2 Marks Each

    1. Mention the general features of bacteria.

Answer: Bacteria are unicellular prokaryotes generally lacking a membrane-bound nucleus and other membrane-bound organelles. They usually possess a cell wall and reproduce mainly by binary fission. They occur in diverse habitats and may be autotrophic or heterotrophic. Some are beneficial in agriculture and industry, whereas others cause diseases.

    2. Describe the general characteristics of viruses.

Answer: Viruses are acellular infectious entities containing DNA or RNA surrounded by a protein coat called a capsid. They lack independent cellular metabolism and cannot reproduce outside living host cells. Viruses infect plants, animals and microorganisms and may cause serious diseases in economically important crops.

    3. Write a short note on algae.

Answer: Algae are mainly aquatic photosynthetic organisms with a simple thalloid body. They contain photosynthetic pigments and vary greatly in size and form. Algae are ecologically important producers and have economic uses. Examples of useful algal products include food, biofertilizers and industrial materials such as agar.

    4. What are the important characteristics of fungi?

Answer: Fungi are eukaryotic organisms that generally lack chlorophyll and obtain nutrients by absorption. Their body commonly consists of thread-like structures called hyphae forming a mycelium. They reproduce through spores and may be decomposers, parasites or mutualistic organisms. Some fungi are economically useful, while others cause plant diseases.

    5. Give the general features of bryophytes.

Answer: Bryophytes are small, non-vascular plants commonly found in moist habitats. They lack true vascular tissues and true roots, stems and leaves. The gametophyte is the dominant generation, while the sporophyte remains dependent on it to a considerable extent. Water is generally necessary for fertilization.

    6. What are the major characteristics of pteridophytes?

Answer: Pteridophytes are seedless vascular plants possessing well-developed roots, stems and leaves. They reproduce by spores rather than seeds. The sporophyte is the dominant plant body. Ferns are common examples. Like bryophytes, they generally require water for the movement of male gametes during fertilization.

    7. Distinguish between gymnosperms and angiosperms.

Answer: Gymnosperms produce seeds that are not enclosed within an ovary, whereas angiosperms produce seeds enclosed within fruits. Gymnosperms generally do not form true flowers, while angiosperms possess flowers or their evolutionary modifications. Angiosperms are the dominant group of seed plants and include most cultivated crops.

    8. What is meant by the elements of economic botany?

Answer: The elements of economic botany refer to the major categories of useful plant resources and their products. Important categories include food plants, fibre-yielding plants, medicinal plants, timber plants, oil-yielding plants, beverage plants and industrial crops. These resources support human nutrition, health and economic activities.

    9. Explain the basic idea of integrated disease management.

Answer: Integrated disease management controls plant diseases by combining several compatible approaches rather than depending on a single method. These may include resistant varieties, healthy planting material, crop sanitation, crop rotation, biological control and carefully selected chemical treatments. The objective is effective disease suppression with minimum environmental and economic costs.

    10. Why do breeding methods differ between self-pollinated and cross-pollinated crops?

Answer: Self-pollinated crops tend to maintain genetic uniformity because fertilization commonly occurs within the same plant. Therefore, selection and hybridization followed by selection are important breeding approaches. Cross-pollinated crops maintain greater genetic variation, so breeders must also consider heterozygosity, combining ability and maintenance of desirable genetic combinations.

    11. What is the significance of breeding in clonally propagated crops?

Answer: Clonal propagation maintains desirable genetic combinations without requiring sexual reproduction. Therefore, breeding in clonally propagated crops generally aims to identify superior plants and preserve their desirable characteristics through vegetative multiplication. Hybridization may first generate variation, after which superior clones can be selected and maintained.

    12. What is meant by crop domestication?

Answer: Crop domestication is the gradual transformation of wild plant populations into cultivated forms through human selection and management. Traits such as larger edible parts, reduced seed dispersal, uniform maturity and improved productivity may become more common. Domestication laid the foundation for the development of modern agriculture.

    13. State the major objectives of plant breeding.

Answer: Major objectives include increasing yield, improving quality, developing resistance to diseases and pests, enhancing tolerance to drought, salinity or other stresses, improving maturity duration and strengthening adaptation to particular environments. Modern breeding also seeks nutritional improvement and efficient use of agricultural resources.

    14. Mention the role of national institutes in plant breeding.

Answer: National agricultural research institutes support plant breeding through genetic resource conservation, crop improvement, research, evaluation and development of improved varieties. Institutions such as ICAR and its specialized institutes provide scientific infrastructure, germplasm resources and trained researchers that contribute to national crop improvement programmes.

    15. Explain the importance of agriculture in the national economy.

Answer: Agriculture provides food for the population and employment and income for a large rural population. It supplies raw materials to several industries and contributes to trade and economic development. Agricultural growth also supports allied activities such as livestock, fisheries and agro-processing, thereby strengthening rural and national economic development.

    C. Long Answer Questions — 5 Marks Each

    1. Describe the general features and broad significance of bacteria, viruses, algae, fungi, bryophytes, pteridophytes, gymnosperms and angiosperms.

Answer: Plant science deals with a wide range of organisms and plant groups that differ considerably in structure, reproduction and ecological importance.

Bacteria are microscopic unicellular prokaryotes. They have no true nucleus and reproduce mainly by binary fission. Some are useful in agriculture and industry, whereas others cause diseases.

Viruses are acellular infectious agents containing either DNA or RNA within a protein coat. They depend completely on host cells for multiplication and can cause important crop diseases.

Algae are mainly photosynthetic organisms with a simple thalloid body. They are important aquatic producers and have uses as food, biofertilizers and sources of industrial products.

Fungi are eukaryotic, non-chlorophyllous organisms that generally obtain nutrients by absorption. They act as decomposers, form useful associations and also cause several plant diseases.

Bryophytes are non-vascular plants such as mosses and liverworts. Their gametophyte is dominant and water is generally required for fertilization.

Pteridophytes are seedless vascular plants, including ferns, with true roots, stems and leaves. Their dominant generation is the sporophyte.

Gymnosperms produce exposed or “naked” seeds, whereas angiosperms produce seeds enclosed within fruits. Angiosperms include most agricultural crops and are the most diverse major group of land plants.

    2. Explain the concept of economic botany and discuss the major economic uses of plants.

Answer: Economic botany deals with plants that are useful to human beings and examines their products, uses and economic importance. Plants provide essential resources for food, clothing, medicine, construction and numerous industries.

Food plants provide carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins and minerals. Major crop groups include cereals, pulses, oilseeds, fruits and vegetables. Plants also provide beverages and spices that have considerable economic value.

Fibre-yielding plants supply materials used in clothing, ropes, bags and other products. Cotton and jute are important examples.

Medicinal plants provide substances used in traditional and modern healthcare. A large number of pharmaceutical compounds have plant origins or have been developed from plant-derived substances.

Timber and forest plants provide wood, paper-making materials, fuel and other forest products. Plants also supply oils, gums, resins, dyes and other industrial raw materials.

Agriculture depends heavily on economically useful plants because crops provide both direct products and raw materials for agro-based industries. Thus, economic botany helps us understand the relationship between plant resources and human welfare. Sustainable use and conservation of economically valuable plants are essential for maintaining these resources for future generations.

    3. What is Integrated Disease Management? Explain its major components and significance in crop production.

Answer: Integrated Disease Management (IDM) is a systematic approach to controlling plant diseases by combining different compatible management methods. Instead of relying continuously on one treatment, IDM aims to keep disease levels below economically damaging limits while reducing environmental and economic problems.

One important component is cultural management, which includes crop rotation, field sanitation, removal of infected plant debris, proper irrigation and suitable sowing practices. These measures can reduce the survival and spread of pathogens.

Host resistance is another important approach. Growing disease-resistant or tolerant varieties can reduce disease development and dependence on pesticides.

Biological control uses beneficial organisms or their products to suppress plant pathogens. Properly selected biological agents can interfere with pathogen growth or infection.

Physical and mechanical methods, such as removal of infected plant parts and appropriate treatment of planting materials, can also be useful.

Chemical control may be employed when necessary, using appropriate pesticides in a judicious and scientifically recommended manner.

IDM is significant because it combines preventive and corrective measures, reduces unnecessary pesticide use, delays the development of resistance in pathogens and promotes sustainable crop production. Its success depends on accurate disease diagnosis, timely monitoring and appropriate integration of available management methods.

    4. Discuss the major breeding methods used for self-pollinated, cross-pollinated and clonally propagated crops.

Answer: Plant breeding aims to develop crop varieties with desirable characteristics such as high yield, good quality, disease resistance and environmental adaptability. The breeding procedure differs according to the reproductive system of the crop.

In self-pollinated crops, natural self-fertilization tends to produce genetically more uniform populations. Important approaches include selection from existing variation and hybridization followed by selection. Pedigree selection, bulk methods and backcross breeding may be used depending on the breeding objective.

In cross-pollinated crops, natural cross-fertilization maintains considerable genetic variation. Breeding programmes may involve selection of superior plants, controlled crossing and evaluation of progenies. Population improvement and hybrid breeding are important approaches. Maintaining desirable genetic combinations and managing genetic variability are major considerations.

In clonally propagated crops, desirable plants can be multiplied vegetatively without changing their genetic constitution through sexual reproduction. Breeders may generate variation through hybridization or identify useful spontaneous or induced variants and then select superior clones. Once a superior clone is identified, vegetative propagation can maintain its desirable characteristics.

Thus, the reproductive biology of a crop strongly influences the breeding method adopted. Effective breeding requires appropriate selection, controlled reproduction, evaluation and preservation of superior genetic material.

    5. Explain crop domestication, the objectives and major accomplishments of plant breeding, the role of national institutes, and the importance of agriculture in the national economy.

Answer: Crop domestication is the long-term process through which humans transformed wild plants into cultivated forms by repeatedly selecting desirable characteristics. During domestication, traits such as larger useful plant parts, reduced natural seed dispersal, uniform growth and better adaptation to cultivation became increasingly important.

The major objectives of plant breeding are to increase yield, improve nutritional and technological quality, develop resistance to pests and diseases, enhance tolerance to environmental stresses and produce varieties suited to particular agricultural conditions. Plant breeding has contributed greatly to improved crop productivity, disease resistance, better plant architecture, suitable maturity periods and improved quality. The development of high-yielding varieties was an important component of India's agricultural transformation during the Green Revolution.

National institutions play an important role by conserving genetic resources, conducting crop improvement research, developing and evaluating improved varieties and providing scientific training and infrastructure. The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and its specialized institutes are central to India's agricultural research system.

Agriculture is fundamental to the national economy because it ensures food supply, provides employment and rural livelihoods, supplies raw materials to industries and supports trade and agro-based activities. Therefore, scientific crop improvement and sustainable agriculture are essential for food security, economic development and rural welfare.
